TPS50601A-SP: TPS50601A-SP

Part Number: TPS50601A-SP

Hello,

If the input voltage is +5V with a rise time of 250us, and the POLs input capacitance is 2 mF, does this mean that the inrush current from the external +5V supply will be Cin * dv/dt, i.e. 2 mF * 250e-6 = 40A? This magnitude could damage the circuit!

Thank you,

Rajan

  • I believe your calculation is correct if no limiting circuity such as a series resistor to the input capacitor is utilized.  However, this is the inrush to the external cap and not the converter DUT.  The peak inrush current to the DUT occurs when the demand for current to charge the output load capacitance.  This is mitigated with soft start circuitry that ensures a slower ramp up of the output.

    Thanks
