BQ29200: Applicability when using two 1CELL battery packs connected in series

Part Number: BQ29200
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ29209,

Hi,

When making a Portable Audio product, I intend to use two 1cell batteries connected in series.
Is there any problem using the BQ29200 or BQ29209 as the balance IC of the two batteries?
When applying BQ29200 or BQ29209, is there a problem with the operation of the battery charger IC?
It should be possible to charge and discharge with the battery charger IC. If there is another suitable product, please recommend it.

Thanks.

Regards,

MJ

  • Hi MJ,

If the batteries are cells with protection for the pair, BQ29200 family can provide balancing. If the batteries have internal protection it is not a good idea since the part can draw extra current if the bottom cell is not connected first.  OUT works properly with the top cell connected first, but the extra current may be undesired.

Operation with the charger IC should be ok, check the requirements for the IC in consideration.

If the batteries have their own protection, check the effect of a load after protection and the charger after protection to be sure the circuitry can withstand the applied voltages.
