TPS7A8300: Current limit behavior

Part Number: TPS7A8300
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS7A84A

Hello experts,

My customer plan to use TPS7A8300 to provide current for two loads.
One load's average current consumption value is about 700mA but peak current value is about 1.4A. The other load is same one.
So, average current consumption should be 1.4A and peak current value might be 2.8A in worst case.
Can TPS7A8300 support this condition?
From datasheet, output current limit is 3.4A(typ), so I thought TPS7A8300 can endure for peak current 2.8A

I would appreciate if you would give me comment.

Thanks and best regards,
Ryo Akashi
  • Hi Akashi-san,

It is likely that the LDO can handle that condition since it is below the typical current limit value however there may be some units which will see the output drop more than 10% since the minimum current limit is listed as 2.1A.

If they think that both loads may have the peak current at the same time resulting in 2.8A, I'd recommend the TPS7A84A which is rated for 3A nominal current. TPS7A84A uses the same design topology and has very similar specifications.
