LM317L: LM317 Input Surge Protection

Part Number: LM317L
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM317

Hi Team,

We are using LM317 device in a 24V power line (16V to 37V) which may face surge/EFT/ESD transients. We are planning to get 12V output from the LDO resulting in a maximum Vo-Vi value of 25V.

We have provided a surge protection device at the input with a clamping voltage of 58V. So during surge/esd transient voltage we may incur a Vo-Vi of 46V (58V - 12V) for 80microseconds.

Please confirm if this will not damage the LDO device as it is not a continuous event.

Also is this device tested for any Surge (±2.4kV line-earth,Line- line Pulse  80us waveform,200 OHM) or Electrical Fast Transients (EN61000-4-4)

Regards,

M Amarnath
