BQ77908A: Designing a 6S Standalone BMS with protection AND balancing

Part Number: BQ77908A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ77915, BQ76942

I am starting a design for a BMS for a 6S battery.  At a minimum, the BMS needs to provide over/under voltage protection, overcurrent protection, and cell balancing.  I am not really interested in actively monitoring the battery.  I do not have the space for a MCU controlled solution, so it need to be standalone. I have looked at most of the options and it appears that the BQ77908 fits the requirements, but it seems to be not recommended for new designs and the EVM board is listed as obsolete.

I also looked into the BQ77915, but I would have to use two of them stacked to get the 6S.

Is there another solution that I am over-looking that does protection and balancing that doesn't require a MCU?

  • Hi Howard,
For a 6s battery pack, where you only want to do protection and passive cell balancing (no MCU), I recommend you look at BQ76942. BQ76942 is a 3s to 10s monitor which can be used in standalone (also called autonomous) mode (aka not connected to a MCU).
