Recommended IC for laboratory power supply design

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM5045, UCC28180, UCC28951

Hello,

i would like to know which IC and topology should i use if i wanna make 0-50V 0-50A 1kW  power supply. I though about resonant topologies for ZVS, but it looks they are more usable for fixed voltages.

I would like to have best efficiency as possible. I dont want to use big heatsink. Thanks for response!

  • Hello Ahmed,

For your power supply design, I recommend you start with WEBENCH: https://webench.ti.com/power-designer/switching-regulator .  From the designs WEBENCH generates, you can then sort/filter the designs by any of the parameters, in this case perhaps by efficiency.  You can then compare other factors and select the design that is best suited for the application.  WEBENCH provides you a way to easily compare designs to find what the best solution for your product will be.

Please let us know which design you have selected, and if you have any other questions.

    Regards,

    ~Leonard

  • Thanks, i cant see any option for variable output voltage range in webench.

  • Hello Ahmed,

guess we're talking about an isolated power supply (?).
Would not recommend LLC for variable Vout/Vin and PSFB isn't a benefit for low voltage input.

In general for 1kW at low voltage input would recommend a hard switched full bridge using LM5045,
this would be my very first starting point.

For offline application at 1kW you need a CCM PFC i.e. using UCC28180; at 400Vdc intermediate voltage
here ZVS makes sense, please go for PSFB i.e. using UCC28951.

    Best regards, Bernd

  • Hello Bernd,

yes i am talking about isolated power supply.

It should be powered from AC mains 230V -> 390V DC after pfc. On secondary site  (after rectification and filtering) should be voltage in range  of 0-50V with max current of 50A, 1kW max output power. Is UCC28951 capable of that? Thanks very much for yours response.

  • Hi Salama,

you are correct, if the input of DCDC is 400VDC that from PFC, then UCC28951 is the best solution for 0-50V with 0-50A.

it can achieve ZVS at middle load and full load condition.
