TPS2595: Is TPS2595 a good solution for following requirements?

Part Number: TPS2595
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS25947

Hi Team

My customer is looking for current protection IC that fits following spec.

Could you kindly tell us the best device for following usage? Thanks.

1. Overcurrent protection around 1A

Usage:For USB 3.0 Type-C Circuit

Working Voltage 5V、current consumption : 900mA(from datasheet)

2. Overcurrent protection around 800mA

l  Usage : Customer's original communication circuit. Overcurrent needs to activate around 800mA)

l  Working Voltage 12V

Customer thinks in TPS2595 series,

TPS259531DSG(OUTPUT VOLTAGE CLAMP 5.7V)  may work for 1.

And TPS259541DSG  (OUTPUT VOLTAGE CLAMP 13.7V) may work for 2.

How do you think? Do you have other better or cheaper option?

And also please let me know if load switch is a better solution here.

Thanks.

Regards,
Jo

  • Hi Jo,

    Thanks for reaching out!

We have a new device TPS25947 releasing  in March and preview version is available on web. It is a good fit for USB 3.0 ,USB PD applications. It has max input voltage rating of 28V which is generally a requirement in USB PD applications. It also has reverse current  and reverse polarity protection .

TPS2595 max input voltage is 20V which may be a concern . It can also work in above requirements.

Generally load switches don't have overcurrent and overvoltage protection. They have inrush current control feature, short circuit protection.

Please see TPS25947 and let us know any questions you have ->

  • Hi Goel

Thanks for the reply and thanks for introducing TPS25947

Since customer is already considering use TPS2595 for other purpose in this same EE and field have provided price to them.(which is cheaper than TPS25947 from Web price. Price is also a concern for customer)

So I think TPS2595 may be a better choice for them if above requirements can be cleared by using TPS2595.

Let me confirm again, is TPS259531DSG and TPS259541DSG a correct solution for requirement 1 and 2 respectively?

    1. Overcurrent protection around 1A

    Usage:For USB 3.0 Type-C Circuit

    Working Voltage 5V、current consumption : 900mA(from datasheet)

    2. Overcurrent protection around 800mA

l  Usage : Customer's original communication circuit. Overcurrent needs to activate around 800mA)

    l  Working Voltage 12V

BTW, as shown above, the power for Typc-C will be only 4.5W so customer don't need PD. So I think TPS2595 is enough for customer.

    Thanks.

    Regards,

    Jo

  • Hi Jo,

Based on above requirements TPS259531DSG and TPS259541DSG would be a good fit for cases 1 and 2 respectively.

Also for any pricing related query you can contact sales or marketing.

  • Hi Goel

    Thanks for reply.

Could you advise does customer need to use TPS259535DSG(w/ QOD function) or just TPS259531DSG(w/o QOD function)  is fine for 1. situation?

I heard the need of QOD function depends on the load type. Does USB 3.0 Type-C need QOD function?

Or could you tell me how can customer decide if they need this function or not? Is there any material or criteria?

    1. Overcurrent protection around 1A

    Usage:For USB 3.0 Type-C Circuit

    Working Voltage 5V、current consumption : 900mA(from datasheet)

    Thanks.

    Jo

  • Hi Jo,

What is the end equipment and what will be the load at VOUT pin of our efuse?
