LP38511: For hazardous locations application

Part Number: LP38511

Hello Guys,

Good day.

Is LP38511 qualified for hazardous locations application? Our customer need something that is rated for a Class 1 Division 2 Group B location per the National Electrical Code, if such an item exists.

Do you have any similar part you can suggest that is for hazardous locations application?

Thanks!

  • Hi Art,

I don't think we have LDO qualified for this particular application. Do you think you could help us to understand the main challenge this qualification requires? Is this really a device level qualification or system level?

    Regards,

  • Hello Jason,

The device will be used in a location where anything electrical has to be rated for a Class 1 Division 2 Group B location according to the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70). Essentially, it will be installed near a location where hydrogen gas could build up and it needs to have safety precautions according to that code in order to prevent a fire. Customer have ways of working around this if no product exists, but it's easier and less time consuming to use a product that is rated for these locations according to the customer.

    Thanks!

  • Hello Jason,

Just like to update regarding this.

    Thanks!

  • Hey Art,

We don't specifically qualify our devices for this but I believe from an LDO point of view the biggest concern is the amount of required capacitance. So we'd want to choose devices that are stable with very low, or no output capacitors. It would also be good to limit the current during a short to GND even, so foldback current limit would be preferred. Is my understanding correct?

  • Thanks for looking into this Kyle!
