BQ79616-Q1: Why we need to measure busbar?

Part Number: BQ79616-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ79616, BQ76952

Team,

In the datasheet of BQ79616, it has a function to measure busbar. May I ask why we need to measure the voltage of busbar? And what is busbar?

Because in other non-stackable AFE, like BQ76952, it has current measurement instead of busbar measurement.

Wish to get your reply, thanks!

  • Hi Miles,

In large HV auto battery systems, they are typically segmented into modules (sets of cells of 4-20 in series). When the pack manufacturers assemble the pack, they need to connect each module together via a "busbar" which is simply a metal connection between modules. It is often desired to be measured to ensure it does not come a loose connection as the car moves over time because losing a bus bar can be a safety critical event. Hence, why we also don't have bus bar measurement for non-stackable devices.

  • Taylor,

    Very understood! Thanks!
