BQ77216: Any known issues when using PBQ7721602PWR with BQ76952?

Part Number: BQ77216
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ76952, TIDA-010208

Hello,

We’ve ordered PBQ7721602PWR samples for use with the BQ76952. I noticed that reference design TIDA-010208 shows BQ77216’s in the block diagrams but they are not in the actual reference design. Are there any particular issues or reasons for that?

The BQ77216 datasheet has sections on use with the BQ76952 and it appears that other than setting LOOPSLOW correctly (to enable proper OW operation in the BQ77216) that there would be no issues when using PBQ7721602PWR’s. Is that true?

Any guidance or information you had would be great. Thank you!

Regards,
John M.

  • Hi John,

Timing of the BQ77216 release led the developer of TIDA-010208 to include it as a test with the EVM rather than include it in the full schematic.

Yes, the guidance in 9.2 of the data sheet is the only known interaction.  If not apparent the filters for the BQ76952 and BQ77216 must be separate.  Of course one choice which must be made is what to do with the outputs of the BQ77216.   For COUT you may want to blow a fuse, for DOUT from low voltage there may not be sufficient voltage to activate a fuse.  You may want to disable the FET driver which in this discussion is the BQ76952.  You may not trust the FET driver in which case you may want to pull down the gate drive such as figure 9-4 of the BQ77216 data sheet.  Here you will need to choose how much current to sink.  You will need to overcome the charge pump of the BQ76952 with a comfortable margin without excessive heating from current from the battery.  For the CHG that may be a few hundred micro amps.  For DSG you again want to overcome the charge pump but here the gate will pull to VSS, so you might use a more aggressive pull down but not sink too much current from your load capacitance or charger if it is present.  In some designs you may want to have separate FETs and will need a driver source for the gates.  Each system may have unique implementations.

  • Hello,

Thank you for the quick reply! We were actually about to order the bq77216 EVM to, hopefully, use with our bq76952 EVM. :)

You’ve answered my questions and given us some great info and tips to consider and I appreciate your time.

    Regards,
