Looking for Li-Ion Isolated Battery Charger

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25792, BQ24133

Hi,

I am looking for universal li-ion charger solution which will can be used for 2S, 3S & 4S. Cell Selections can be done in Jumper selections. Please suggest me solution which will match my below specification.

Input Voltage: 180 ~ 270VAC/50Hz
Output : Battery Selectable: 2S, 3S, 4S
Output Max Charging Current: 1A for all configuration
Indication: Charged & Charging
Output: Isolated

  • Hi Nishanth,

The best solution here is to use isolated flyback to create an intermediate voltage like 20-24V.  Then use a dedicated battery charger IC like BQ25792 to handle the charging algorithm.

One example that can be used for the AC/DC solution is

Or you can use any adapter that outputs something around 20V.

    Hopefully this helps.

    Thanks,;

  • Hi Nishanth,

I agree with Robert's suggest of using the BQ25792 following the ac/dc flyback reference design.

  • Hi,

    Thanks for the reply...

Your design 100% matches my specification, but the problem is charger cost is high and UCC2863 is not Active PFC. Sorry to mention in my post, I am looking for the very low cost effective solution. Will you suggest me any other low cost solution and with active PFC.

  • Hi Nishanth,

For the charger, the best option is BQ24133.  It has direct power path (unlike the BQ25792 which has NVDC powerpath), meaning the input voltage is expected to be connected to the system.  The battery only connects if the input voltage goes away.
