TPS51216: alternative part

Part Number: TPS51216

Hello Guys,

Need your help regarding our customer concerns below.

The problem they have is this. They are using the TPS51216 chip in their design. Please see attached file. It was extracted from p22 of the TPS51216 datasheet.

The design works fine on most boards. The TPS51216 regulates the DDR3 voltage to 1.5 volts.

However, on some boards where there are soldering problems, the TPS51216 get out of control and outputs more than 2.0 volts, burning 4 DDR3 chips. DDR3 chips are of the BGA type and they are not easy to replace. Also they are expensive.

They were wondering if there is another TI part with the same pinout and that is not adjustable and that always outputs 1.5 Volts no matter what happens.

Another question they have is: Is there any surge protection device to clamp the TPS51216 out to no more than 1.8 volts?

Thanks in advance!

  • Hi Art,

I think the best way is to find out what caused the soldering problem and solve it, since this soldering problem can happen somewhere else if not on TPS51216 related components.

If customer is concerned about Vout being too high, I think a zener diode can help to clamp the voltage.
