Good morning,

I'm asking your help because I'm having problem with BQ2057WSN mounted on a PCB in order to charge a 2S1P Li-Ion battery, here the link with all technical information:

The power supply that I'm using to recharge the battery is a 12V medical degree, from MeanWell (model GSM60E12). The length cables is about 90 cm.

What I'm facing during the test of the PCB is that randomically, when I plug the power supply, the BQ2057 gets damage in an irreversible way.

I attach here the schematic:

Components highlighted in green are not soldered on the PCB.

The BQ2057 is configured in MOSFET configuration, with a recharge current of 500mA.

The p-MOS model is: 781-SUM55P06-19L-E3.

Do you have an idea of how I can remove this strange behavior?

Sorry I forgot to highlight also R128, this is component is not soldered too.

Hi Anthony,

what is happening is that the current flowing into the battery is that no current is flowing into the battery when i plug-in the power supply.

When I removed it the whole consumption of the PCB is increased of about 30 mA.

This current consumption is for sure related to the damage of the BQ2057 because if i remove the chip from the PCB current consumption goes back to a correct value.

Hi Matteo,

Has this happened before or is this the first time?

Looking at the schematic, I notice that the TS is having a direct impact on the CC Pin. Is there a reason for this? Are you attempting to use it to control the PFET?

Do you have multiple units that have been damaged?

Dear Anthony,

- It happened also before, so I added a 100nF as input filter capacitance (is not shown in the schematic), in order to avoid possible overshoot on Vcc pin.

- Yes I'm using the BQ2057 in MOSFET configuration, so TS pin is connected to CC pin via R122 and R130. Configuration should be the same suggested in development board schematic.

- Yes on a batch of 20 boards I had 7 PCBs damaged in the same way

Hi Matteo,

Are you referring to the schematic with a BJT?

This is not seen in our example schematic with a FET.

Yes we referred to the schematic with the BJT.

Hi Matteo,

Yes this can potentially be the issue as the BJT configuration. The BJT schematic allows the IC to regulate the current going into the BJT while the FET configuration should allow for voltage regulation to the gate of the FET.
