TPS53819AEVM-123: GUI reporting back N/A

Part Number: TPS53819AEVM-123
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS53819A, TPS546B24A, TPS546D24A, TPS546A24A

Hi,

I have the above eval board (TPS53819AEVM-123) and am running version 7.6.1 of the TI Fusion Digital Power Designer tools via a TI USB adapter.

The chip does (as far as I can see) register correctly on the system (please see second screen shot below)

The software can see the device at address 16d, and can enable/disable it etc, but all of the values that I need it to be able to show are blank or shown as "N/A"...(please see first screenshot below)

I suppose my question is how can I activate the readback (or input? I have no idea, and the manual doesn't explain) of these fields?

Thanks and best regards,

Colin

Unfortunately the images you linked did not come through in your message.  While the browser will typically apply you to "cut and paste" images in to the editor, but they will appear as broken link when published.  You need to use the Insert/Edit Media button above.

The TPS53819A has limited PMBus functionality, so there are a lot of standard functional fields used by the GUI that are N/A, because the software can not detect them.  If those are the values you are looking for, there is no way to enter them into the GUI.

  • Hi Peter,

Thanks for replying to this one, and for your help, please find the screen shots below (hopefully)

Yes, the values we need via PM bus are basically the output voltage, output current, enabled/disabled state, temperature and any fault conditions, similar to your screenshot.

Is it that the GUI for the DK can't display these, or that the device (or the USB adapter?) can't/doesn't provide them?

If the first, obviously we can work around that with code in the final system, but in the second case the part is basically unusable for us.

I have seen a graph of output voltage in the GUI (it has now gone, I think I moved the plot window, but the documents give no clue as to how to restore it - can you help?) It looks like some of these commands are available, can you confirm which ones, please?

Thanks in advance and best regards,

    Colin

Here is the Supported PMBus commands from the TPS53819A datasheet

It does not have telemetry (active reading of the current input voltage, output voltage, output  current, device temperature, etc) and while it provides adjustment of the output voltage through the VOUT_ADJUSTMENT and VOUT_MARGIN,  the output voltage is programmed by the feedback divider resistor, so the GUI has no way to detect  or program the value.

If you need a device that offers telemetry through PMBus, I would suggest looking at the TPS546A24A, TPS546B24A, or TPS546D24A, depending on the current level you need to drive.
