BQ25792EVM: Solar charging for 3S lithium batteries not working with BQ25792EVM

Part Number: BQ25792EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25792, BQ25798

Hello.

We are designing a new solar charger for 3S lithium batteries (12V) with a 20W solar panel to charge 6800mA 3S lithium batteries.

We are testing the BQ25792EVK before finish our design and we are seeing that the evk is not charging the battery with the solar panel.

I attach a photo of the configuration I have made in the EVK that if I am wrong is like it says in the BQ25792 manual for one unit input.

The voltage I get from the solar panel is 20,4V. I have connected it directly into the Vin1. It is ok? Or I should place any zenner 12V to do not connect more than 12V?

The STATUS LED is always OFF and I have firstly check the EVK with my power unit giving 12V, also 20V and it works, I mean, the battery is being changed.

The device that I have connected to the output (SYS) consumes 140 mA.

As the battery has 3 wires (+, GND and THERM), I have connected the AGND in the THERM connector to PGND of the battery. It is ok?

Can you please help me with this?  Thanks .

  • Hi Javier,

Your connections look correct.  Since you connected the pack thermistor (hopefully 10kohm), you need to remove the shunt on JP18, which installs a 10kohm resistor to simulate a thermistor.

TI has a spin of the BQ25792 named BQ25798 which is more optimized for solar panel and provides MPPT.  I recommend you move to that IC.  It has the same pinout.

    Regards,

    Jeff
