GPCCHEM: GPC Report has 0 value

Part Number: GPCCHEM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO, BQ34Z100

Hi,

I am trying to get Chem ID from GPC tool, so for that I have uploaded required .zip file, however in GPC report, I am receiving the value as 0.

Please find the attached .zip file which I have uploaded in GPC tool.

Please help in understanding if I miss some information.

Thanks and Regards,

Sudha NayakchemIDgeneration.zip

  • Hi Sudha,

There a few issues with you data

    1. time should be in seconds elapsed (integer format)
    2. the final relax portion needs to be longer (5 hr recommend)

Also make sure the battery is fully relaxed before starting the discharge, it look like you have an adapter connected.

    Best regards,

    Nick

  • Hi Nick,

    Thank you for the information.

I updated the log file as you have mentioned and I have got Chem ID as 3288 from GPC tool.

In BQstudio 3288 Chem ID means ATL 309591(3829mAh) LiMn204(Co,Ni)/carbon 4.35

We are using Lithium Ion NMC 3s1p battery with each cell voltage 3.7-4.2V with 2900 mAh capacity.

We wanted to confirm that, chem ID we received from GPC tool is matching our battery configuration or we have missed any steps while capturing the log(rel-disch-rel) cycle which led to wrong chem ID.

Please help us to understand are we in right direction and can we use GPC generated Chem ID and go through learning cycle.

    Best Regards,

    Sudha Nayak

  • Hi Sudha,

Can you attach the GPC report? As long as the deviation is acceptable you should use 3288.

    Thanks,

    Nick

  • Hi Nick,

Please find the attached GPC report.

I have completed Charge and relax cycle using 3288 Chem ID. BQStudio is showing full charge capacity as 1710mAh instead of 2900mAh.What steps needs to be fallowed to get proper capacity and State of Charge information in BQStudio?

    Thanks and Regards,

    Sudha NayakchemIDgeneration-report.zip

  • Hi Sudha,

The report looks ok, after you program the chemID you should complete a learning cycle.

    Best regards,

    Nick

  • Hi Nick,

We are following the SLUA925 document to complete the learning cycle  for the BQ34Z100.

    Charging Cycle

1)At the start of charge, the [VOK] bit in the IT status () register set.

    2) At the end of charge the [FC] bit in the Flags() register did set.

    Relax Cycle

    1) The [VOK] bit in the IT status() register did clear once the gauge has taken an OCV reading.
2)The Flags[OCVTAKEN] flag did set when a valid OCV reading occurred

    3) Once Update Status()became 0x05 , we started discharge cycle

    Discharge Cycle

1)Discharged battery to 9.2V, because 9V is our battery termination Voltage.

    Relax Cycle

    1) The [VOK] bit in the IT status() register did clear once the gauge has taken an OCV reading.
2)The Flags[OCVTAKEN] flag did set when a valid OCV reading occurred

    3) Update Status() is not becoming 0x06, We have waited more than 20Hours

Please help us to understand what step we are missing.

We are following TI responses from more than a month and still we are stuck with learning cycle, and we need to wait 1 day to get responses from TI which is delaying completion of learning cycle.

We are charging at 1A and discharging at 550mA.

Please find the attached .gg file and log file attached here and let us know if we are not configuring any parameter as expected.

  • Hi Sudha,

Here are the steps you should be following. Do not split up the charge and discharge portion, they all should be done in one go.

    0. Export GG File (for later comparison)
    1. Enable IT
    2. Send Reset command (0x0041)
    3. 550mA Discharge to empty
    4. Rest 5 hours (Important)
    5. Ensure that DOD0 has been updated in the last 5 hours
    6. 1A Charge to full
    7. Rest for 2 hours (Important)
    8. Ensure that the QMax and DOD0 have updated during the last 2 hours
    9. 550mA Discharge to empty
    10. Rest 5 hours (Important)

    Best regards,

    Nick

  • Hi Nick,

Thank you for the detailed steps.

Shouldn't we wait for update status to become 06 at the end of the discharge cycle?

    Best Regards,

    Sudha Nayak

  • Hi Sudha,

Yes, update Status should change to 6 after the second Qmax update occurs during final relaxation (assuming Ra was also updated during the discharge).

  • Hi Nick,

    Thank you for the confirmation.

We had one more doubt, Is it okay if the relaxation cycle post discharge can be of the order of 10-12hours and similarly relaxation cycle post charge can be of the order 4-5 hours or more?

Please help us to clear this doubt.

    Best Regards,

    Sudha Nayak

  • Hi Sudha,

The wait time is just a recommendation but the [VOK] and [RDIS] bits need to be cleared.

    Best,

    Jessica

  • Hi Nick,

We are trying learning cycle with 3288 Chem ID.

We followed the steps as you have mentioned before.

We discharged the battery and relaxed for 5hrs, then we charged completely (FC bit is high) and relaxed for 2hrs. VOK bit got cleared and OCVTAKEN bit got set, however we did not get update status as 5, so we again discharged it and relaxed fpr 5Hrs (as we referred some TI forum) but still update status did not get update from 0x4 to 0x5.

Please find the attached log and ..gg file before starting of learning cycle ang after completing Charge-relax cycle.

Please help us to find why update status bit is not updating as expected.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Sudha Nayak

  • Hi Nick,

I have seen CalEn bit in PackConfiguration register was set high during entire learning cycle which we carried out.

During learning cycle should we set this bit high or low?

    Regards,

    Sudha Nayak

  • Hi,

Please guide us to solve the above issue.

    Best Regards,

    Sudha Nayak

  • HI,

We have disabled the CalEn bit and carried out learning cycle, however update status is not becoming 05 after charge-relax cycle.

Please help us to understand what step we are missing because we are following same steps as mentioned above. It's been more than 2 months and we are still stuck at learning cycle which is gating our further implementation.

Please find the attached .gg file before and after charge relax cycle and log file.

  • Hello,

Make sure you update the series cells and perform any calibration. Your FCC is jumping during discharge, then in relax it goes back to around 1000mAh. This could be due to a configuration (design capacity, series cells) or bad chem ID where it is correlating to the wrong voltage.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller

  • Hi Wyatt,

    Thank you for your reply.

We are using Lithium Ion NMC 3s1p battery with each cell voltage 3.7-4.2V with 2900 mAh capacity. We have got Chem ID as 3288 from GPC tool.

We are setting design capacity as 2900mAh and series cell as 3 in BQStudio and we have calibrated voltage ,current, temperature and CC offset as mentioned in the documents.

About FCC, we have raised this question in TI forum that we are not getting FCC as 2900mAh and we have got the reply as it will be updated once we carryout entire learning cycle, however we are not able to complete the learning cycle because update status is not updating to 0x05 as expected.

We have shared .gg file, could you please provide your valuable inputs, if we are wrongly configuring any parameter.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Sudha Nayak

  • HI,

Any update on this? This issue is gating our further implementation.

Please guide us with your valuable inputs.

    Best Regards,

    Sudha Nayak

  • Hello Sudha,

As mentioned in the other posts, this is most likely related to the same issue for learning cycle of either the chem ID or the 90% change in DOD required for the learning process.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller

  • Hi Wyatt,

    Thank you for your response.
