TPS62840: Current consumption increase for very close of Vin and Vout...

Part Number: TPS62840

Dear Sirs,

My customer use TPS62840 for 3.3V output to their system.

He found while the system in standby mode and the TPS62840 Vin is 3.36V~3.39V, the current consumption will increase 600~900uA.

If the Vin is higher than this period, the system current will return to normal.(~0.02mA).

Is this symptom normal or not?

The customer test report as attached.

Thanks.

  • Hi Peter,

    Thank you for your question.

This behavior is intrinsic of the device operation, and it is present near the border between 100% Mode Operation and PFM Mode. In this region small variations of VIN / VOUT (for example the voltage ripple), can toggle the mode of operation of the device that, working in a not well defined condition, periodically starts switching, increasing the overall current consumption.

As soon as you exit this critical region (either increasing or decreasing VIN), the device returns in a defined operation mode, consequently reducing also the current consumption.

The problem can be minimized increasing CIN/COUT in order to reduce the voltage ripples but cannot be eliminated, since it is intrinsic to the converter control.

Please ask again if you need further support.

    Thanks,

    Stefano
