TPS54260-EP: Inductor Dimensioning

Part Number: TPS54260-EP
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS54260

I would like to use the TPS54260-EP to generate 6V (0.8A) with an input ranging between 7V and 50V (hold-up circuit).

Webench recommends a 3.5A inductor which seems to me to be very oversized and requires very large device which is incompatible with the size of my board.

For more details please ask me or alternatively you can simply use webench with the parameters provided and using the TPS54260 device.

I would like to use the B82477R4224M100 inductor .

In your opinion is it adequate for my purpose?

Many thanks.

  • Hello,

Webench is calculating the inductor's power rating for the peak current limit of the device.

If your application does not need to handle short circuit condition, you can possibly get away with smaller power rating inductor.

Please be aware though, if overload condition does occur, or inductor current overshoot occurs due to fast load transient, inductor can be susceptible to failure and also the power converter due to possible current runaway.
