TPS7A16: quiescent current

Hello.

We faced a problem with high Iq of TPS7A1601DRB. Datasheet specifies 5uA, but we can observe up to 6..7 mA (Vin = 6V).

Furthermore, on some boards Iq is high just immediately after main supply is applied, on other boards Iq starts to rise some time later.

Iq is also rises together with increasing Vin voltage.

PCB layout is designed according to DS recommendation, input and output capacitors are also in the recommended range.

Delay input is not used.

Could you please specify, what could be a reason of high Iq current for TPS7A1601DRB?

Thank you.

  • Hi Slava,

It seems that the device may be unstable. The output capacitor you are using is outside of the stability requirements necessary for the device.

If you put a current probe on the ground current, is it oscillating? If the current is oscillating, we'd recommend you bring the output capacitor up above 4.7uF (assuming 50% derating on the capacitor so that the capacitance is kept above 2.2uF).

    Best,

    Juliette
