BQ29200: Reverse Polarity Protection

Part Number: BQ29200

I'm in the process of implementing cell balancing functionality for a 2S1P 18650 Li-Ion battery pack and looking to use the BQ29200 in tandem with a charger that provides OV, UV, Thermal, etc... protections.

The BQ29200 expects the battery pack to always be attached to the module, however, I'm investigating reverse polarity protection as an additional safety measure.

My current design consists of 2x P-Channel Mosfets isolating each cell in the event of improper insertion.

Does Texas Instruments produce any modules for reverse polarity protection capable of working in support of the BQ29200 or have any recommendations?

  • Hi Ryan,

The BQ29200 does not monitor current or undervoltage.  Protectors which control directional FETs (charge and discharge separately) will see a reverse charger as an over current or low voltage event and turn off the discharge FET to prevent the forced discharge.  BQ29200 does not have those features and your system will need additional design.  We do not have a reference design for reverse charge protection with the BQ29200.

There are relatively few ICs for 2 cells with multiple features, many are overvoltage protection only. Some gauges support 2 cells.  Check the selection guides at www.ti.com/battery.
