TPS22963C: Output Short

Part Number: TPS22963C
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS22950

Hi,

I am using TPS22963C on a design and would like to know the expected behavior under a fault condition. The enable pin is pulled up to Vin in this application. If Vout is shorted to ground downstream of the load switch, what is the expected behavior? Will it go into thermal shutdown and disable the switch?

Thanks!

Emma

  • Hi Emma,

This device has no form of thermal shutdown, current limit or short circuit protection. A short to GND on the output could lead to the device seeing unsustainable current flowing through the FET and could result in damage to the device.

I would recommend looking at TPS22950 which has current limit and thermal shutdown for your system.

  • Thanks Shreyas. We are actually currently seeing this fault on one of our boards, and found that Vin stayed up while Vout was shorted. I also ran a quick TINA sim and saw similar behavior when shorting the output. I understand that TPS22963C wouldn't provide reliable short protection, but am wondering what mechanism could be causing this in our case.

  • Hi Emma,

There might be a situation where your supply is strong enough to maintain its voltage during the short event through the ON resistance of the FET. It is tough to say though as we don't guarantee a failure mode. Since short to GND is a potential occurrence on your system, you may benefit from our of our part with current limit or thermal shutdown.
