bq24650 - Lead Acid Equalization Charge

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24650

Is there a way for the bq24650 to achieve the " equalization charge" as specified in IEA Task III report in §7.1   To summarize, this charging state is used to equalize the capacity of each individual cell inside a multicell battery.  It is implemented by increasing the voltage per cell to 2.5V-2.6V for 0.5hr-1.0hr once a week.

  • The bq24650 allows the use of an equalization charge mode.  The bq24650 uses an external resistor divider to set the charge voltage, which gives the user flexibility to charge batteries with different maximum charge voltages.  Equalization charge mode is easily implemented by switching in a resistor in parallel with the lower feedback resistor.  This can be accomplished by taking an series connection of the resistor and a small MOSFET and connecting this circuit in parallel with the lower feedback resistor.  Either a timer or a microprocessor will turn on the FET for the appropriate time to increase the charge voltage.
