LM5122: What is the difference between LM5122 and LM5121?

Part Number: LM5122
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM5121, TPS43061, TPS43060

Hello TI experts,

my customers consider the boost controller of TI product.

first they consider LM5122 and LM5121, but i don't know the difference exactly.

- LM5121 : have good efficiency at light load, and have adjustable current limit.

- LM5122 : phase interleaving.

1. what is more difference between these 2 devices?

2. compare these 2 device and TPS43601, what is the good point of TPS43601?

3. what is the reason of the cheap price of TPS43601 compare to LM5122 and LM5121? (almost half price)

4. can you recommend the best IC that suitable for our condition?

  - input : 24Vdc, output : 30Vdc

  - current : max 10A

  - others : need overvoltage and short protection

please check these issues. Thanks.

Best regards,

Chase

  • Hi Chase,

Thank you for your interest in LM5121/LM5122.

    1. LM5121 provides the disconnection switch control which gives inrush current limit and stronger protection, while LM5122 provides the internal phase shift for easy multiphase interleave.

    2. I'm not an expert of TPS43601 but looking at the datasheet, it is a step down converter not a step up controller like LM5121/LM5122. So I would say they are quite different.

    3. Like said in 2, I don't think they are comparable.

    4. If the customer does not need the disconnection switch feature, I recommend to use LM5122.

Please let me know if there is any question.

    Thanks,

  • Hi Yinsong,

    Thank you for your reply.

i realize that the difference between LM5121 and LM5122, thanks to your explanation.

and I also realized that I wrote wrong part number to you, it is TPS43061, not TPS43601.

can you explain the difference among these 3 parts for me?

    please check this issue. Thanks.

    Best regards,

    Chase

  • Hi Chase,

For the detailed comparison between TPS4306x and LM5121/LM5122 (referred to as LM512x), you need to go to their datasheets because they are different core devices. Here I can give some major differences as highlight.

    • LM512x has higher input/output voltage range than TPS4306x.
    • TPS4306x has lower operating current and shutdown current than LM512x.
    • TPS43061 has the optimized gate driver for NexFET.
    • TPS4306x has the power good indicator.
    • TPS43061 integrates a bootstrap diode while TPS43060 and LM512x do not.
    • LM512x has the selection between FPWM and diode emulation mode while TPS4306x runs in diode emulation mode.
    • LM512x has the hiccup mode protection.
    • LM5121x has the disconnection switch or multi-phase features as mentioned above.
    • TPS4306x has smaller package size.

    Thanks,

    Yinsong
