BQ4050: Shut off learning feature

Part Number: BQ4050
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: GAUGEPARCAL, BQSTUDIO

My company is using the BQ4050 as our main IC due to all its functionality. However, we are finding that the Over Charge flag starts to get thrown more and more often, even though we haven't changed anything with our charging procedures. I did more reading into the technical reference manual and found that the battery needs to be cycled 6 times for the learning to take effect. So, we were wondering if there was any way to shut off the learning feature as we set our full charge and full discharge parameters at set up. We want to use those parameters instead of having it learn new ones.

We also saw in the Battery Management Studio a place for advanced calibration. Do we need to do the advanced calibration along with the first 6 cycles? We really just want a way to shut the calibration and learning off. We already set up our minimum and maximum voltages.

  • Michael,

The gauge will constantly be learning. The 6 cycles can be done outside of the system and just collected on the bench. They are used to establish the "EDV" end voltage points. The procedure to follow is located here https://www.ti.com/tool/GAUGEPARCAL. If you want to do some debug, under the settings tab you can disable all the protection features to allow you to use the device without it auto stopping. This will help collect data to then setup the device correctly.

There are two types of calibration

    1) Gauging calibration - the 6 cycles will do this using the GAUGEPARCAL tool. It might be worth it to run an additional few cycles just to test accuracy.

    2) Device calibration. This is 100% critical because this will make sure the gauge reads the correct current/voltage/ and temperature. This is done through the "Calibration" plugin within bqStudio

    Thanks,
