BQ76952: Series and Parallel connection of BMS considerations and possibilities.

Part Number: BQ76952

Hi,

We have designed a BMS with BQ76952 for a 10s battery pack.

The design is perfectly working. But, we are in need of connecting 2 or more of these BMS in parallel and series combinations.

1. Series connected BMS:

  • Possibilities
  • Recommendations
  • Design considerations
  • Limitations

2. Parallel connected BMS:

  • Possibilities
  • Recommendations
  • Design considerations
  • Limitations

Should we make all these series or parallel connection in a single PCB or can connect Two or more such separate 10s BMS externally, or both can be done. Which will be recommended to be the best.

Thank you

  • Hi Prabhu,

For connecting packs in parallel, that should not be an issue. You can connect parallel cells to the same PCB. Cell balancing will take longer since more charge has to be depleted for the same change in voltage, but everything else should be the same.

For series configuration, it become more complex. I am attaching a presentation that goes into the considerations for stacking in more detail. 0044.How to stack non-automotive protectors and monitors in high-cell-ccount applications.pdf

  • Hi,

In our case, we have the 10s 3p battery packs each with separate BMS and not be able to separate those packs with the BMS.

So, is there any considerations in paralleling up 2 or more BMS, each with separate battery packs of same or different paralleled number of cells?

    Thank you

  • Hi Prabhu,

This should be okay since the packs are in parallel. Each pack will operate independently though, so if one of the packs triggers protection, you may not be able to support as much discharge current if the other two packs are still enabled. In general it should work well, but you may want to think through and test out these types of situations.

We do not have much experience to offer you running multiple packs in parallel.

    Best regards,

    Matt
