BQ40Z50-R2: battery using IC is charging correctly, but won't supply power

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R2
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO

3500mAh (2S1P) battery with bq40z50-R2 chip inside is currently able to charge up to 100% correctly but when trying to run device off of battery it supplies ~8V every 20 seconds and then resets right away. So seems to be in some sort of sleep/wakeup routine.

I haven't changed any ManufactureAccess() registers.

Let me know if you have any ideas?

  • Hi David,

Are you using the BQ40z50EVM or a custom EVM? Can you send me your gg file?

    Best,

    Jessica

  • data3500.gg.csv

Using a battery with custom EVM. Attached is the gg, a reset after exporting this data seemed to fix, but occurred on another battery with the same specs as well. Reexporting data on the battery after a reset resulted in the same results.

  • David,

Please enable lifetime recording when the issue is happening then export another gg file. In addition are you able to connect the device to bqStudio to log all the registers? It sound like a protection even is triggering then recovering, but without seeing a log we wont be able to tell you which one.

    Thanks,

    Eric Vos

  • Thanks Eric, I enabled lifetime recording. I am able to connect to bqStudio, that's how I received the gg attached in the post before.
I'll run the battery over the next week and see if I get the same occurrence.

  • Following up on this, I assume this was an overvoltage charge problem on these batteries. I also had problems on a different size pack also using BQ40Z50-R2 and it didn't report Terminate Discharge Alarm correctly as well as requested current. The overvolt charge occurred in constant voltage charge mode. Working with the vendor now to troubleshoot. For now, looking at fully charged status bit to determine when to stop charging.

  • David,

If you can provide the latest GG file and log file I can take a look at what I see. Otherwise I will close this thread. Please file a new one if more info arises.

    Thanks,

    Eric Vos
