TPS2560: TPS2560DRC : Current limiting functionality

Part Number: TPS2560

I am using TPS2560DRC as a power switch for USB interface. When validating the design, i came with different overload response on the two output.

The switch is designed for current limiting at 1A.

1.when over loading the OUT1 over 1A, the output voltage dips to zero >Over current protection.

2. when overloading the OUT2 over 1A, the output current limits to 1A and getting a stable 5V out >Current limiting.

  • Both port have current limiting function?
  • Is it the expected result or any design issue?

The schematics is attached here.

  • Hi Vipin,

Both ports share same current limit function,

    It's abnormal for port 2.

You can try to short it to PGND and have a look whether works normal.

Fault should be pulled up by a resistor if you want to use that pin.

  • Hi ziv

I think port 2 behaves as normal since the function of this IC is current limiting.

I'm facing issue in port 1 since the output dips to zero if i draw more than 1A from the port which means over current protection.

  • Hi Vipin,

It depends on what's the junction temperature of the IC as OC. As in current limit condition, if the output current is small, it's possible to limit the current to a stable value. But if the output current is large, it will thermal cycle. So it should behave same for both part. You can try to load more current such as short to GND of both port and figure out any difference.
