in slva833d, for a 24V system , the max IN-OUT voltage during surge test is around 60V (Figure 4-4，When a ±500 V, 2Ω surge pulse is applied, the input
voltage clamps to a ±44 V maximum. The Internal FET experiences maximum stress during the negative surge event. Maximum voltage across the device is the sum of the input clamp voltage and the output voltage under no load conditions. The maximum device stress at nominal), which is close to max rating of TPS2660;

how do we do Surge Protection for 48V input system？

Thanks for reaching out!

For 48V system, we would need additional bidirectional TVS diode across the device between VIN to Vout to protect the device, as an example Figure 3-1 in https://www.ti.com/lit/ug/slvubx9/slvubx9.pdf . Also, slightly bigger TVS diodes may be required to clamp effectively.

We never evaluated as we hear primarily for 24V applications. Please use SMCJ48CA and validate on EVM.

our primary concern is that the IN-OUT VOLTAGE could be above max rating during surge test with SMCJ48CA and avalanche happens on IC'S inside mosfet, while no avalanche rating is defined in datasheet;

is it ok to use tps2660's mosfet in avalanche mode under the surge test ?

Hi Sean,

We don't recommend exceeding Vin-Vout spec as it stress the internal vds sensing control circuit

Hi Sean,

I would suggest to consider LM5069 which is rated to 80V continuous and 100V abs max voltage rating. We can configure as per https://www.ti.com/lit/an/snva683/snva683.pdf
