RE: AM625: Linux Kernal Boot time reduction for AM625

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UNIFLASH, AM62P, AM62P5

Hi Aparna,

SBL OSPI also takes 12 sec how to reduce boot time. I attached a screenshot below:

How to reduce time. I read some TI threads also but not clear.

Regards,

Veerapandiyan V

  • Hi Veerapandiyan,

Please refer this guide to optimise the linux kernel and using a tiny filesystem as mentioned: software-dl.ti.com/.../How_to_boot_quickly.html

If you have any specific doubts, follow back on this thread.

    Regards,
    Aparna

Please refer this guide to optimise the linux kernel and using a tiny filesystem as mentioned: software-dl.ti.com/.../How_to_boot_quickly.html

I've read all the steps mentioned in the above link, but I couldn't understand the changes to be made there.
Can you elaborate on the steps by giving any examples?

    Regards,

    Veerapandiyan V

  • I've read all the steps mentioned in the above link, but I couldn't understand the changes to be made there.

The guide is well documented, and it is out of my scope to explain it further with examples. If you have any questions specific to a given section, I can help with it.

    Regards,
    Aparna

  • Hi Aparna,

I tried this step in U-Boot but not working:

    How to solve this issue.

    Regards,

    Veerapandiyan.

  • Hi Veerapandiyan,

Can you please reply to the questions listed below?

    1. Are you using Falcon Mode? If yes, any changes to U-boot will not be used since U-boot proper stage is completely skipped. Try using the device tree method.

    2. When you said you tried the step in U-boot and it did not work, do you mean to say it did not boot or that it did not reduce the boot time?

  • Hi Shenai,

I am used ti-processor-sdk-linux-am62xx-evm-09.00.00.03 and mcu_plus_sdk_am62x_09_02_00_38. I load  the default_sbl_ospi_linux_falcon.cfg after changing the boot mode switch OSPI boot mode is coming error I attached the error log below:

    How to solve this error.

    Regards,

    Veerapandiyan.

  • You cannot mix and match the SDK versions. 9.2 is the version we recommend that has all the boot optimizations.

  • Hi Shenai,

I did not understand and explain briefly.

    Thanks,

    Veerapandiyan V.

  • Hi Shenai,

I tried ti-processor-sdk-linux-am62xx-evm-09.02.01.09 and mcu_plus_sdk_am62x_09_02_00_38. I load  the default_sbl_ospi_linux_falcon.cfg after changing the boot mode switch OSPI boot mode is coming same error I attached the error log below:

  • Hi Veerapandiyan,

Could you share what are the steps you have followed until now?
Do the default images, without any changes work for you?

    Regards,
    Aparna

  • Hi Aparna,

     I tried ti-processor-sdk-linux-am62xx-evm-09.02.01.09 and mcu_plus_sdk_am62x_09_02_00_38. I load  the default_sbl_ospi_linux_falcon.cfg file below:

    1. Not compiling lines 16,23 and 27 this file is already built.

    2. I compiled the file lines 20,31 and 40 also compiled using the command:  make -s  all

    3. 34 file only compiles CCS software.

    4. 37 HSM image compiled using the command:  make -s BOARD=am62x-sk all

    5. 43 Linux image compiled using the command: make -s BOARD=am62x-sk all FALCON_MODE=1

After saving the file. Next change the boot mode switch to UART boot mode open  then this location  /home/bpt/ti/mcu_plus_sdk_am62x_09_02_00_38/tools/boot/ open terminal use the command:  sudo python3 uart_uniflash.py -p /dev/ttyUSB0 --cfg=sbl_prebuilt/am62x-sk/default_sbl_ospi_linux_falcon.cfg

    Regards,

    Veerapandiyan V.

  • Hello Veerapandiyan,

The steps look correct. Is the wic image correctly flashed into the SD card ?

Linux kernel loads from SD card. Make sure the version of wic image flashed into the SD card matches with the sdk version.

    Regards,
    Aparna

  • Hi Aparna,

SD card boot mode working fine 9.2 version processor SDK. I tried SBL boot default_sbl_ospi_linux.cfg mode working fine but I tried SBL boot default_sbl_ospi_linux_falcon.cfg mode only got an error. How to fixproblem

     Regards,

    Veerapandiyan

  • Hi Veerapandiyan,

In falcon boot mode, since there is no U-boot, you will need to pass the the location of filesystem in bootargs. Please apply the following change and try again:

    diff --git a/arch/arm64/boot/dts/ti/k3-am62p5-sk.dts b/arch/arm64/boot/dts/ti/k3-am62p5-sk.dts
    index 4b8e7964c..3fbfca6e9 100644

Here, the boot media is SD card and filesystem is present in 2nd partition. You can make the modifications accordingly.

    Aparna

  • Hi Aparna,

I edited the file location and then put sudo make linux command is getting an error asking how to fix it. I attached the error log file below.

  • Hi Veerapandiyan,

After making the changes, please run make linux in the SDK directory.

  • Hi Veerapandiyan,

I couldnot reproduce the above error at my end.
Are there any additional changes in the Linux kernel?

    Regards,
    Aparna

  • Hi Aparna,

I am not editing this file.

In falcon boot mode, since there is no U-boot, you will need to pass the the location of filesystem in bootargs. Please apply the following change and try again:

I am using the Linux version below:

    No LSB modules are available.
    Distributor ID: Ubuntu
    Description: Ubuntu 20.04.6 LTS
    Release: 20.04
    Codename: focal

  • Hi Aparna,

I am trying for the Ubuntu 22 version build to be done. Then I installed files on the SD card, Next, I powered up the EVM board in the SD boot mode not reducing the delay again coming 16 sec I attached the screenshot below:

    Using Commands:

    1. First edit the file, Next, build the  Linux command make linux

    2. make linux_stage

    3. Insert the SD card and then open the processor SDK path to install compiled files in SD card using the command:  sudo DESTDIR=/media/$USER/rootfs make linux_install

    5. For GP Board copy the tiboot3 and uboot img files command below

    host# sudo cp board-support/built-images/tiboot3-am62*-gp-evm.bin /media/$USER/boot/tiboot3.bin
    host# sudo cp board-support/built-images/u-boot.img board-support/built-images/tispl.bin /media/$USER/boot

    6. Next Insert the SD card EVM board powered up board not reducing time delay in SD card boot mode.

    7. How to reduce boot time delay please update.

    Regards,
    Veerapandiyan V.

  • Hi Veerapandiyan,

From the logs shared by you, looks like the changes mentioned in documentation are not applied. Refer here

Adding "quiet" argument in bootargs, will suppress the kernel messages, and reduce ~8 secs.

    Regards,
    Aparna

  • Hi Aparna,

I was adding the bootargs = "console=ttyS2,115200n8 earlycon=ns16550a,mmio32,0x02800000 quiet" command the file location is /home/bpt/ti-processor-sdk-linux-am62xx-evm-09.02.01.09/board-support/ti-linux-kernel-6.1.80+gitAUTOINC+2e423244f8-ti/arch/arm64/boot/dts/ti k3-am62p5-sk.dts file edit then build using the command make linux after finishing the build. After copy the files sd card using commend below:

    k3-am62p5-sk.dts

    comment

    1.  To install in SD card directly: host# sudo DESTDIR=/media/media/bpt/rootfs make linux_install

    2. host# sudo cp board-support/built-images/tiboot3-am62*-gp-evm.bin /media/bpt/boot/tiboot3.bin

    3. host# sudo cp board-support/built-images/u-boot.img board-support/built-images/tispl.bin /media/bpt/boot

Otherwise how to transfer files and build please tell me.

    Regards,

    Veerapandiyan V.

  • Hi Veerapandiyan,

make linux command is used to build the Linux kernel, and hence you have to modify the Image and and k3-am625-sk.dtb files in the root partition of the SD card.

    Location of Image: linux/arch/arm64/boot/
    Location of dtb:linux/arch/arm64/boot/dts/ti/

  • HI Aparna,

Now, I have tried with am62p by the method of editing the dts file and using the commands in u-boot based on your previous reply.

In falcon boot mode, since there is no U-boot, you will need to pass the the location of filesystem in bootargs. Please apply the following change and try again:

  • Hi,

I hope you have replaced the following files before building the linuxappimage.hs_fs:
    ATF_BIN_NAME=bl31.bin
    OPTEE_BIN_NAME=bl32.bin
    KERN_BIN_NAME=Image
    FDT_BIN_NAME=k3-am625-sk.dtb

    Refer config.mak file in tools/boot/linuxAppimageGen/board/am62px..

If yes, then please re-build the linuxappimage.hs_fs and share the error logs.

    Regards,
    Aparna

  • Hello Veerapandiyan,

I couldn't find the Image file in the above-mentioned directory. You can find this file in processor SDK. Please place the Image file into am62pxx-evm-display-cluster/ directory and try again.

    Location of Image: linux/arch/arm64/boot/

    Regards,
    Aparna

  • Hi Aparna,

based on your previous instructions I have tried that and the file has been created successfully but while booting, it stopped booting for your reference I have attached the screenshot kindly go through this and let me know the solutions.

update: for fast boot, I can see that bare-metal code is loading and I can see it in MCU UART, but the Linux is not loading to any point (i.e, the splash bin file is not loading) and it gets stuck to this point on the Linux side.

    Regards,

    Veerapandiyan V.

  • Hello Veerapandiyan,

The file location is mentioned in the shared patch. Make changes by referring to the patch, in the SDK/board-support/trusted-firmware-a-2.10+gitAUTOINC+00f1ec6b87/ directory.

Steps to build after applying patch:
    https://software-dl.ti.com/processor-sdk-linux/esd/AM62X/latest/exports/docs/linux/Foundational_Components_ATF.html

Briefly explain this, unable to understand.

After you build the bl31.bin, copy it to the mcu+ sdk, so that new address as updated in the patch will be used and re-build the linux.appimage.hs_fs
