Why TI does it sell obsolete circuits?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMS320C5505

- The title of this forum is TMS320C5505 eZdsp USB Development Tool, not TMXVC320C5505 eZdsp USB Development Tool.

- On this page, http://focus.ti.com/docs/toolsw/folders/print/tmdx5505ezdsp.html?DCMP=DSP_c5505usbstick&HQS=Other+OT+c5505ezdsp-prprod I read :

Features of the TMDX5505eZdsp include:

  • Small form factor DSP development tool for C5505 processor
  • TMS320C5505 fixed point low power DSP
  • Embedded XDS100 emulator
  • ....

- On the same page, when I click on "Technical documentation and Schematics", I go to http://support.spectrumdigital.com/boards/usbstk5505/revb/ and when I now clic on the following link http://support.spectrumdigital.com/boards/usbstk5505/revb/files/usbstk5505_Schematics_revb.pdf , the dsp reference is C5505, not VC5505

I don't understand why when I order a circuit in September 2010, I receive a eZdsp Stick with an obsolete VC5505...

TI said : "TI does not recommend using this part (VC5505) in a new design. TI encourages designers to consider alternative products for new designs."

Best regards,

  • Hello Jean-Loius,

I apologize for the confusion. We actually do not have a EZdsp with the C5505 part although we are planning to have one soon. The page you are referring to does have the confusing references that you have mentioned. However, the reference devices mentioned on the product page are the VC5505 and VC5504 devices. I believe that you should be able to use the C5515 EZdsp to try out anything you wish to implement on the C5505 device since the features in C5505  are a subset of those in C5515. I will look into how we can help replace the VC5505 EZdsp with the C5515 EZdsp and get back to you.

  • Hello Mugdha,

Thank you very much for your answer and your offer.

If I understand well, it is not possible, now (sept 2010), to evaluate the circuit. The EVM that you sell is not any more on the site, and spectrum digital, who sells the EVM, indicates that this one is equipped with bad chip (but there is no reference to VC chip in the site) (http://www.spectrumdigital.com/product_info.php?cPath=37&products_id=220&osCsid=e6746a94d217e4a242e0ab2f7db17679).

I still do not understand why TI is not able to pay an engineer to put the good circuit, to change 4 resistances, and to modify the 4 lines of code source…

Does the circuit (C5505) really exist?

    Regards

    Jean-Louis VERN

  • Hello Jean-Louis,

Let me please clarify this again. We are not going to recommend this EVM in this link any more to the customers. http://www.spectrumdigital.com/product_info.php?cPath=37&products_id=220&osCsid=e6746a94d217e4a242e0ab2f7db17679

We are also not planning to develop any special EVM for C5505 (rev A) silicon. C5505 belongs to the same family as C5504/14/15 and all these 4 are pin-to-pin compatible. We can use the TMDXEVM5515 http://focus.ti.com/docs/toolsw/folders/print/tmdxevm5515.html to evaluate all the 4 devices.

Some of our customers are looking for lower-cost development tools and hence we created the eZdsp tools.  TMDX5515EZDSP uses the same silicon as TMDXEVM5515 and can be used right away by you. This is availble for $79. Some of the universities wanted us to reduce the cost even further and that's why we've devloped an even lower-cost tool TMDXEVM5505 last year. This is available for $49 but we'r still updating this with Spectrum Digital to have the new revision C5505 part. There is layout change, updating all the examples and verification. Most of it is complete now and we should have the next revision with the latest revision of the C5505 processor in about 2 months.  Until then, we've some universities still using the previous rev of silicon so we are keeping them available.

During this time, we recommend you to get either TMDX5515EZDSP or TMDXEVM5515  to evaluate C5505,C5504, C5514 or C5515. Both are readily available today. The other option is that you can evaluate with your current TMDX5505EZDSP and when you have your own prototype, you could make the necessary software changes to use the new version of the silicon. We've migration information from VC5505 (PG 1.4 silicon) to C5505 (PG2.0 silicon) available on our Wiki at:

    http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/TMS320VC5504/05_to_TMS320C5504/05/14/15_Migration

Hope that helps. Have a good weekend!

  • Jean-Louis VERN,

The http://focus-webapps.ti.com/general/docs/sitesearch/searchdevice.tsp?partNumber=tmdx5515ezdsp (c5515eZDSP) contains TMX, not TMS, silicon.
