AM4378: Ethernet Driver Crash issue on the Prototype Board

Part Number: AM4378
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83620, AM4372

Attachment contains crashlog &  dts changes for ethernet.

  • Sorry, Two prototype board are connected directly over ethernet. Did a ping from both sides and a crash was observed on both boards.

  • Your Linux log indicates that a DP83620 is being detected, but your device tree contains configuration data for a DP83867:

        dp83867_0: ethernet-phy@4 {
            reg = <4>;
            ti,rx-internal-delay = <DP83867_RGMIIDCTL_2_25_NS>;
            ti,tx-internal-delay = <DP83867_RGMIIDCTL_250_PS>;
            ti,fifo-depth = <DP83867_PHYCR_FIFO_DEPTH_8_B_NIB>;
            ti,min-output-impedance;
            ti,dp83867-rxctrl-strap-quirk;
        };
        dp83867_1: ethernet-phy@2 {
            reg = <2>;
            ti,rx-internal-delay = <DP83867_RGMIIDCTL_2_25_NS>;
            ti,tx-internal-delay = <DP83867_RGMIIDCTL_250_PS>;
            ti,fifo-depth = <DP83867_PHYCR_FIFO_DEPTH_8_B_NIB>;
            ti,min-output-impedance;
            ti,dp83867-rxctrl-strap-quirk;
        };

    Looking at the Linux source code, the DP83620 support can be found in the file drivers/net/phy/dp83848.c.  It looks to me like the DP83620 is closely related to the DP83848.  I do not see any relationship to the DP83867, so I believe the reference above should be removed.

    I also see some warnings related to the Ethernet:

    [    1.697944] cpsw 4a100000.ethernet: Missing dual_emac_res_vlan in DT.
    [    1.704458] cpsw 4a100000.ethernet: Using 1 as Reserved VLAN for 0 slave
    [    1.711227] cpsw 4a100000.ethernet: Missing dual_emac_res_vlan in DT.
    [    1.717713] cpsw 4a100000.ethernet: Using 2 as Reserved VLAN for 1 slave

    I think that pertains to these highlighted lines from your device tree:

    &cpsw_emac0 {
            phy-handle = <&dp83867_0>;
            phy_id = <&davinci_mdio>, <4>;
            phy-mode = "mii";
            ti,dual-emac-pvid = <1>;
    };

    &cpsw_emac1 {
            phy-handle = <&dp83867_1>;
            phy_id = <&davinci_mdio>, <2>;
            phy-mode = "mii";
            ti,dual-emac-pvid = <2>;
    };

    I couldn't find anything by that name in kernel 4.19 (Linux SDK 6.03).  I believe those should be replaced with the following respectively:

    dual_emac_res_vlan = <1>;
    dual_emac_res_vlan = <2>;

    Please try out those changes and post your updated dts fragments and boot log.

    Thanks,
    Brad

  • Updated the changes and still crash was observed.

  • Have you tried taking eth1 down and doing some testing with only eth0?  That might be a better place to start.

    Can you please attach a COMPLETE BOOT LOG.  What you attached is a crash log.  The full boot log would be much more helpful.  Also, it's easier to review if you save the boot log as a text file and attach the file.  It is harder to review inline in the thread.  Thank you!

  • Hi Brad,

    I have attached the log with the new findings.

    As mentioned removed "DP83867" related configuration.

    The DTS fragment is:

    &mac {
    pinctrl-names = "default", "sleep";
    pinctrl-0 = <&cpsw_default>;
    pinctrl-1 = <&cpsw_sleep>;
    status = "okay";
    dual_emac = <1>;
    };

    &davinci_mdio {
    pinctrl-names = "default", "sleep";
    pinctrl-0 = <&davinci_mdio_default>;
    pinctrl-1 = <&davinci_mdio_sleep>;
    status = "okay";

    ethphy0: ethernet-phy@4 {
    reg = <4>;
    };

    ethphy1: ethernet-phy@2 {
    reg = <2>;
    };

    };

    &cpsw_emac0 {
    phy-handle = <&ethphy0>;
    phy-mode = "mii";
    dual_emac_res_vlan = <1>;
    };

    &cpsw_emac1 {
    phy-handle = <&ethphy2>;
    phy-mode = "mii";
    dual_emac_res_vlan = <2>;
    };

    The ifconfig here is:

  • From the above ifconfig the MACID are same for both the interfaces.

  • Hi Brad,

    The New thing we tried is tried to disable the eth1 from the DTS file.

    The Crash is not seen,but the ping does not happen.

    Please find the logs attached for this scenario.Ethernet-issue.zip

  • Hi,

    Thank you for collection of data regarding the issue you have.  The tcpdump at the end of the third log file is the most the interesting. The log shows the ARP-Request arriving from the ping source and then it shows the ARP-Reply.  The last step is to make sure the ARP-Reply is received by the device sending it. I would recommend either tcpdump on the sender or better wireshark if you have that installed.

    Since you are getting a NETDEV Watchdog warning would seem to indicate that the packets are remaining queued and never being sent. To verify that your board is able to send packets I would try a ping from your custom board using wireshark using a direct connection with your board and using the static IPs like you are using.

    Best Regards,

    Schuyler

  • Ethernet-logs.zipHi Schuyler,

    On the PC (windows) connected  to the target there is no packet seen on the wireshark, it was just blank.

    I have the ethtool datat  and the kernel trace while ping is running on the Target and the PC.

    Here is a link to a similar issue:

    e2e.ti.com/.../dp83826i-imx8qxp-linux-5-4-no-tx-and-rx-packets

  • Hi,

    I reviewed the pin mux and if it matches the first post it looks like the tx_clk pin direction is reversed what is needed. Please try matching this line pin direction

    AM4372_IOPAD(0x92c, PIN_INPUT | MUX_MODE0) /* (D14) mii1_tx_clk.gmii1_txclk */

    In MII the PHY sources both tx and rx clks to the MAC interface.

    Best Regards,

    Schuyler

  • Hi Schuyler and Brad,

    Thanks for the timely inputs.

    These recommendations worked for us.

    We are able to ping on both the eth0 and eth1 interfaces, as TX is operational.
