[FAQ] [TDA4VL] The board can't display by DP port

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TDA4VL

Hi experts,

 Using TDA4VL board and 8.0.3 SDK, build and make SD card by default  setting, it boot normally but  don't display by DP port, and can't get any info about display driver by command: modetest -M tidss -p ,

 could you help me resolve this issue? Thanks!

Best Regards,

Cary

  • Hi Cary,

    Please find attached patches, which enables eDP display on TDA4VL device. Please apply patch Display_On_J721S2.patch in ti-processor-sdk-rtos-j721s2-evm-08_00_03_05\vision_apps folder, rebuild SDK and install it on the SD card and then copy k3-j721s2-vision-apps.dtbo to rootfs/boot folder of the SD card.

  • Hi Brijesh,

     I applied your patch and install SD card by your tips, but the issue still produce, I need your further support, thanks!

  • Hi Cary,

    Are you checking this on EVM? Because i am able to see eDP display with these change on EVM.

    Regards,

    Brijesh

  • Hi Brijesh,

     Yes, I am checking that on EVM, list my steps:

    1. apply the patch in  ti-processor-sdk-rtos-j721s2-evm-08_00_03_05\vision_apps;

    2. make vision_apps -j4;

    3. make linux_fs_install_sd;

    4. copy  k3-j721s2-vision-apps.dtbo to rootfs/boot folder of the SD card;

    5. Insert SD card to EVM, power on EVM;

    after those steps, I can catch boot logs by minicom, but there is nothing showing on the monitor.

    I will check the master board for hardware issues

  • Hi Cary,

    What's the eDP display you are using?

    One difference could be, i have tested only HP monitor with this change. For other displays, we might require more changes, especially enabling of eDP_PWN signal on the board. This is done by configuring io expander, which is controlled by i2c1. But this is currently disabled in apps_utils_soc.c file in vision apps, due to some i2c issue..

    Regards,

    Brijesh

  • Hi Brijesh,

    I am using DELL monitor.

    I changed the master board for testing this issue, but it still produce.

    Do you need some others info for debug this issue? I attached boot log may help debug this issue. Thanks!

  • Hi Cary,

    Can you make small change in the code and try it?

    In the file, ti-processor-sdk-rtos-j721s2-evm-08_00_03_05\vision_apps\utils\dss\src\app_dss_soc.c, can you please appDssConfigureDP API as below, rebuild SDK and try eDP display?

    void appDssConfigureDP(void)
    {
    #if defined (SOC_J721E) || defined (SOC_J721S2)
        Board_STATUS b_status;
        Board_IoExpCfg_t ioExpCfg;

        appLogPrintf("DSS: Turning on DP_PWR pin for eDP adapters ... !!!\n");

        #if defined (SOC_J721S2)
        ioExpCfg.i2cInst = 4U;
        #else
        ioExpCfg.i2cInst = 1U;
        #endif
        ioExpCfg.socDomain = BOARD_SOC_DOMAIN_MAIN;
        ioExpCfg.slaveAddr = 0x20;
        ioExpCfg.enableIntr = false;
        ioExpCfg.ioExpType = ONE_PORT_IOEXP;
        ioExpCfg.portNum = PORTNUM_0;
        ioExpCfg.pinNum = PIN_NUM_0;
        ioExpCfg.signalLevel = GPIO_SIGNAL_LEVEL_HIGH;

        b_status = Board_control(BOARD_CTRL_CMD_SET_IO_EXP_PIN_OUT, (void *)(&ioExpCfg));

        if (b_status == BOARD_SOK)
        {
            appLogPrintf("DSS: Turning on DP_PWR pin for eDP adapters ... Done!!!\n");
        }
        else
        {
            appLogPrintf("DSS: ERROR: Turning on DP_PWR pin for eDP adapters failed !!!\n");
        }
    #endif
    }

  • Hi Brijesh,

     I applied your patch, but it still produce this issue. Do you other way to confirm the display driver is all right?

  • Hi Cary,

    Did you rebuild sdk after this change? Because above change would require rebuilding sdk.

    If it still does not work, are you sure that the display you are using supports standard 1080p signals? Can you please check?

    Regards,

    Brijesh

  • Hi Brijesh,

    I apply your patch in SDK as below steps:

    1.  make vision_apps -j4 in ti-processor-sdk-rtos-j721s2-evm-08_00_03_05/vision_apps/;

    2. make linux_fs_install_sd  in ti-processor-sdk-rtos-j721s2-evm-08_00_03_05/vision_apps/;

    3. boot EVM by SD card mode; but the monitor show nothing.

    Is there any error in my operation?

     And I take daughter board and SD card to other's master board to test this issue, it produce same result. do you need some log on this issue?

  • Hi Cary,

    I don't see any other reason for it to fail. Is the display device that you are using support 1080p resolution? If possible, can you please connect it to Laptop, read the EDID and check if it supports 1080p resolution?

    Regards,

    Brijesh

  • Hi Brijesh,

    The monitor support 1080p, my Laptop can connect it and work well.

  • Hi Brijesh,

    I checked some config files, I'm not sure app_cfg_mcu2_0.h was changed right, could you share me that file in your project, thanks!

  • Hi Cary,

    Sure, can you please try with the attached file, rebuild the SDK and try again?

    /cfs-file/__key/communityserver-discussions-components-files/791/app_5F00_cfg_5F00_mcu2_5F00_0.h
