AM437x IDK thermal issue

Hi,

Our customer purchased AM437x IDK few weeks back and testing the
EtherCAT Slave application from the ISDK.

The AM437x gets heated up if they run the EtherCAT application for 5 to 10 mins.
The chip temperature goes more than 50 degree, just running the Ethercat sample code
at the default frequecny set in the ISDK Gel file.

Is this temperature normal for an EtherCAT application on AM437x
or is there any issue on the AM437x IDK, please let us know if there is
any info on this topic.

Hi,

I will forward this to the Industrial SDK team. However I want to ask how do they measure the processor temperature and what is the ambient temperature when they measure 50 degrees processor temperature?

Hi Biser,

Thank you so much.

It seems they are measuring the CPU's outside(package) temperature with an
external temperature measuring instrument (like DMM with thermal paste).
I think EVM is tested in the room temeperature(25 to 27 deg).

The CPU(AM437x) Package is so hot that it couldn't be touched with a bare hand,
we believe the junction temperature of the CPU would be more hotter(more than 50 deg).

Thanks for the additional info. While waiting for comments from the factory team, I found this wiki: http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/AM437x_Thermal_Considerations However it doesn't have much data yet.

Hi Biser,

Any updates on this issue?

Meanwhile I have some additional info,
actually AM437x CPU might be normal but the external components
are heating up extremely and effecting the AM437x.

We found that external components on the IDK board (like U9 SN74LV244A, LDO)
are extremely hot (around 48 degree to 50 degree).

We have found this issue on two IDK boards and believe this
issue may occur on all the IDK boards.
May be something wrong on the IDK design.
