Thank you for your answer Pavel,

from what I can see, we would need to recompile the kernel in order to be able to map the timers as pwm because by default 

CONFIG_PWM_OMAP_DMTIMER in kernel configuration file is switched off.

So our problem is that with older kernels we could easily access the timers registers from /dev/mem, and now our code, with newer kernels is freezing the whole system.

We would like to find a solution that works with the kernel out of the box given in the standard debian images, without recompiling the kernel, if possible.

I'm honestly curious about why now is not possible to access to those registers again since the kernel change doesn't seem to provide any better default behavior or userspace facilities.

We were happy about the registers controls, everything was working smoothly but now it looks like we cannot use those pins again without recompiling the kernel.

I'm not sure how things work beneath, but to me, it seems a regression.

The worst case scenario is probably that we will have to move the beaglebone black pins P8_7, *8, *9, *10

to some other pwm output.

We support beagleboard, but with TI linux on it (Arago linux).
