TMS320C6655: PMIC or power design for C6655 smartreflex?

Part Number: TMS320C6655
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM10011, LM10010, TPS56121, LMZ31704, TPS54320, TPS54424

Dear Champs,

It looks it is too old to use power design in the C6657 EVM, and I would like to check your recommendation for power design of C6655 including SmartReflex.

Could you please recommend power device for C6655?

My customer started the development using TMS320C6655, and they feel the power design in the EVM  is too complex.

Thanks and Best Regards,

SI.

  • SI,

Please see the attached presentation.  It was originally prepared for the LM10010 which was later superceded by the LM10011 which has higher precision.  Please also see the many E2E posts discussing the LM10011 and TPS56121 with C667x and C665x.

  • Hi Tom,

    Thanks for your response.
How about LM10011 and LMZ31704RVQR combination for C6655?
my customer wants to use LMZ31704RVQR for DCDC with LM10011 as it integrated inductor. Is it possible to use LMZ31704RVQR with LM10011 for C6655?

My customer's expected power consumption for their usecase is as below, and they are expecting 3A would be enough. But, I'm would check with you on this if there is any instant power consumption increased over 3A even at a moment or any other limitation to use LMZ31704RVQR with LM10011.

    Thanks and Best Regards,
    SI.

  • SI,

The LMZ31704RVQR appears to be an acceptable alternative.  You will need to work through the equations.  The LMZ31704RVQR does contain a 0.6V reference voltage and the resistor connected to VOUT is internal to the device and it is a 1430 ohm resistor.

  • Hi Tom,

    Thanks for your response.

It seemed it is hard to modify feedback resistors of LMZ31704, and thus my customer is considering LM10011 + TPS54320 combination.

But, they found the minimum output voltage of TPS54320 is +0.8V although C6655 requiring ~0.7V ~ +1.1V.

Is it possible to use LM10011 + TPS54320 to C6655?

from TI web, I found below.

My customer's design and calculations are

  • SI,

I am concerned about the 0.8V reference in the TPS54320.  The product page for the TPS54320 points you to the newer TPS54424.  The TPS54424 is in the same size package and it operates with a 0.6V reference same as we used on our reference designs with the LM10011.  I recommend that the customer uses a power converter with a 0.6V reference.

The analysis looks good.  Once it is redone for the TPS54424, I expect the design will be ready to approve.
