TMDX654IDKEVM: DDR4 memory issue

Part Number: TMDX654IDKEVM

Our customer purchased a new TMDX654IDKEVM, but it can fail to boot after power up.

If the SD card with the diagnostic applications is used, nothing is printed on the terminal after power up. After being reset by PORz switch, it can boot and all tests in the Power On Self Test pass.

I checked the markings of the DDR4 memories on the customer's TMDX654IDKEVM and found that the part number was different from the part number in the BOM.

TMDX654IDKEVM BOM: MT40A1G8WE-083E:B

By the way, I checked the markings of the DDR4 memories on own TMDX654GPEVM.

Does DDR4 initialization fail due to the replaced DDR4 memories?

Best regards,

Daisuke

  • Hi,

    A few thoughts:

The memory may have a difference which requires an update to the register configuration settings (ex: density, width, etc.). In this case, you should use the XLS spread sheet available in the link below to update the register settings.

    www.ti.com/.../spracj0

Additionally, can you confirm that both memories have the same ball map?

It may also be worthwhile to check the electrical connection between the memory and PCB, and that nothing else on the board was damaged during the replacement.

    Best regards,
    Kevin

  • Hi Kevin-san,

    Thank you for your reply.

The both memories have the same ball map and width between balls, but the different package sizes, speed grades, case temperatures and die revision.

Please note that my explanation above is missing, if the SD card with Linux is used, after U-boot retries several resets by failing to initialize (leveling) DDR4 memory, Linux can boot. By the way, checking with the latest pre-built images of the PSDK (RTOS and Linux) gave the same results as above.

The replaced memories which are different from the part number in the BOM have been replaced by the manufacturer (MISTRAL), NOT by our customer.

Our customer has ten TMDX654IDKEVM boards, but only one of them has this issue. I have already requested our customer to check the markings of the DDR4 memories on the remaining nine boards.

    Best regards,

    Daisuke

  • Hi Kevin-san,

    Daisuke Maeda said:

The markings of the DDR4 memories on one of the other boards are the same as the board which has the issue. The most boards have been lent to their contractor, so those boards cannot be checked immediately.

Our customer requires that the board which has the issue is returned and replaced with a new board. I will contact my local TI representative to request RMR.

    Best regards,

    Daisuke
