AFE7901: AFE7901

Part Number: AFE7901
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AFE7903

Hello Expert,

my customer is currently interested in AFE7901 and AFE7903. they want to use this RF sampling chip as a normal high speed ADC. Regarding the application of chips, they have the following questions to ask:
1. The lower frequency limit of the input signal is 5MHz. What factors affect this frequency?
2. What is the response time of DSA, that is, how long does it take from sending a switching command to when the gain reaches the set value?
3. How will the signal acquisition be affected during DSA gain switching?
4. Can the Decimation Filters module and Complex Mixers module be completely shielded and directly output the ADC raw data?
5. The sampling rate of ADC is 3Gsps. Should we set the sampling frequency arbitrarily, such as 1.5Gsps, 1.6Gsps, etc.
6. Whether the Serdes interface can adjust the actual number of interfaces used according to our sampling rate setting?

Best regards,

  • Hi Wenting,

I will reach out internally to get more detailed responses for questions 1-3. For the other questions please see the responses below:

    1. Can the Decimation Filters module and Complex Mixers module be completely shielded and directly output the ADC raw data?

The AFE7901 or AFE7903 do not support bypass mode.

    1. The sampling rate of ADC is 3Gsps. Should we set the sampling frequency arbitrarily, such as 1.5Gsps, 1.6Gsps, etc.

The sampling rate can be set when configuring the part but the maximum sampling rate is 3GSPS.

    1. Whether the Serdes interface can adjust the actual number of interfaces used according to our sampling rate setting?

The number of active SerDes lanes and the mapping can be adjusted inside the device to fit different JESD modes based on the LMFSHd. The supported LMFSHd modes for the RX channels are shown in section 3.2.3 of the "AFE79xx_ConfigurationGuide_SBAA417_Jun2020.pdf" under Application Notes.

    Best,

    Camilo
