AFE7444: AFE7444 and TSW14J57 setup Tx/Rx loopback continous data capture

Part Number: AFE7444
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TSW14J57EVM, , TSW14J58EVM, AFE8000EVM

Tool/software:

Dear TI Support Team,

We have recently purchased the AFE7444EVM and TSW14J57EVM platforms. But now i am currently kind of stuck to set up an initial loopback Tx/Rx configuration. In reference to the AFE74xxEVM user’s guide (slau783.pdf), the test setup for mode 4 demonstrates using an external reference LO to generate a signal with the AFE7444 DAC. However, I would like to request if you can provide me with an example configuration for setting up a loopback Tx/Rx (pin-pong automation). I have reviewed the documentation but could not find detailed instructions on configuring the DAC and ADC for this setup to send and capture data using the TSW14J57EVM and the AFE7444EVM boards.

Any assistance or guidance you could provide would be greatly appreciated as it would help me further move on with my current project.

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration in this matter.

Best regards,

Alejandro

  • Hi Alejandro,

Is there any specific reason for using the AFE7444 for this project?

You can use TI's latest RF sampling transceiver, AFE790x/AFE795x family devices for this application. AFE79xx has more channels, performance, and bandwidth at lower power per channel and lower cost when compared to AFE74xx. You can request access to full datasheet and other resources of AFE79xx here: https://www.ti.com/drr/opn/AFE79XX-HSC-DESIGN

In regards to loopback on the AFE7444, are you attempting to loopback the DAC output to the ADC input or loopback the JESD inside the part?

If the second option then you can reference the video linked below.

  • Dear David,

Thank you for your email and for the valuable information you provided.

The decision to use the AFE7444 for this project was primarily based on its specific features that align with the project's (digital predistortion, hardware impairments mitigation) initial requirements and the budget associated, we also have acquired the TSW14J58EVM with the AFE8000EVM.

I appreciate your suggestion regarding the AFE79xx family. I will certainly look into the AFE790x/AFE795x devices, as they seem to offer significant advantages in terms of bandwidth, channels, performance, and power efficiency, unfortunately now are beyond our budget. I will also explore the resources available through the link you provided.

Regarding the loopback, as an initial setup, I am attempting to loop back the DAC output to the ADC input (ping-pong capture data from ADC, send data to DAC) for one channel firstly, using an LTE-30 MHz (LTE_Freq_30MHz_Amp_0dB_BW_20.003MHz_307.2MSPS). Initially performing this manually using the GUI HSDC Pro and eventually modifying the automated data transfer example code (TSW40RF82_PingPong_Example). The test setup explained in the “User's Guide SLAU783–October 2018 AFE74xxEVM User's Guide” unfortunately considers an external LO, instead of the LO internal configuration.

I have been obtaining an error when i try to loading of the firmware, I received this error and i am still trying to figure out how to fix it:

If you have any additional guidance or resources on setting up this configuration, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you again for your support.

    Best regards,

    Alejandro

  • Hi Jose,

Can you please try following the video, linked below, for bringing up the EVMs? This may prove to be more helpful for your evaluation.

  • Dear David CHAPARRO,

Thank you for your prompt response and for providing the video link. I have carefully followed the instructions provided in the video; however, the solutions offered do not seem to resolve the specific issues I am encountering with the EVM evaluation setup.

Could you please advise on any alternative steps or provide further guidance to address this matter? Your assistance in this would be greatly appreciated as I continue with the project.

Similarly, in the previous comment I am reaching out to seek your assistance regarding an issue I have encountered with the HSDC Pro software. It appears that the software has been experiencing difficulties when interacting with the firmware for the specific board TSW14J57 I am working with, i dont know what version is the compatible. Each time I attempt to load the firmware, I receive an error message [ERROR 1097 occurred at Call Library Function Node in TSW1400.lvlib:14j57revE{Firmware Details.vi->TSW14000.lvlib:Frame.vi]. Despite my efforts, I have not yet been able to resolve the issue.

I would greatly appreciate any guidance or suggestions you might have on how to address these issues.

Thank you once again for your support.

    Best regards,
    Alejandro

  • Hi Jose,

Which version of the HSDC Pro software is being used on your computer?

Can you try uninstalling the version you have and install the version linked below to see if this fixes the issue you are facing?

  • Dear David,

    Thank you for your suggestion.

I have tried using both versions 5.20 and 6.0 of the HSDC Pro software (re-installing as well), but unfortunately, I encountered the same issue with both versions. I appreciate your assistance and would be grateful for any further guidance you might provide.

    Kind regards,
    Alejandro
