AFE7903: Compatibility and Flexibility of AFE7903 eval, AFE7900EVM & TSW14J58EVM

Part Number: AFE7903
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AFE7900EVM, , TSW14J58EVM, TSW1418EVM, AFE7900, ADC3444EVM, FMC-ADC-ADAPTER

Tool/software:

Hello. We are planning to purchase an evaluation board for testing the AFE7903. The only recommended eval board on the chip’s page is the AFE7900EVM. What limitations might we encounter with this?

Additionally, we will need a data capture board for the AFE7900EVM. The only recommended option is the TSW14J58EVM. We previously ordered the TSW1418EVM, and while the FMC connectors appear to be the same, we are not sure due to the lack of complete documentation. If the TSW1418EVM does not work, will we be forced to purchase the TSW14J58EVM? Should we go ahead and buy it?

Thanks..

Taha

  • Hi Taha,

The AFE7900 is the superset part, so the AFE7900EVM can be used for evaluation of all AFE790x parts. There are no limitations using the AFE7900EVM for your evaluation.

The capture board to be used with the AFE7900EVM is the TSW14J58EVM. The TSW1418EVM is not compatible with the AFE7900EVM, so the TSW14J58EVM will be required.

  • Hello David;

First of all, thank you for your return.

In the meantime, I have reviewed the documents I could find. I noticed that there are two different models of FMC connectors: one with 160 positions and the other with 400 positions. For the 7900EVM, I am considering using the 'Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC ZCU102' instead of the TSW14J58EVM. Do you think it is OK?

By the way, I have another question for you. I do not have any data capture module for the ADC3444EVM. Therefore, I am thinking of purchasing the 'FMC-ADC-ADAPTER' and connecting it to the 160 position FMC connector on the 'ZedBoard'.

Do you think I am on the right track with these plans? I am about to place orders based on this, so your assistance is important to me.

    Thanks again,

    Taha

  • Hi Taha,

Both the AFE7900EVM and ZCU102 follow the Vita 57 spec so they are compatible. One thing to note is that a JESD IP will be needed on the ZCU102 in order to interface with and evaluate the AFE7900EVM.

For the ADC3444EVM, the 'FMC-ADC-ADAPTER' board follows a standard FMC connection so it would also be compatible with the ZCU102.
