Buy RF component

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DAC5682Z, DAC34H84

Dear,

I am a student in master degree and I have to work on an algorithm for the linearization of defined software radio (mainly to linearize harmonics and intermodulation produced by IQ modulator).

In this purpose, I use a previous work explained in an article. In this work, the test-bed is composed of 1 Altera DE3 (FPGA), 1 DAC5682z EVM (for the TRF3703 IQ Modulator) and 1 ADC/DAC board. However my lab doesn’t have any stuff (mean no FPGA, modulator etc…) so I need to buy these components. Yet I have almost no budget from my lab (even if I still don’t know how much) so it’s totally impossible for me to buy the components quoted above.

Therefore these are my two questions:

1)      I almost don’t know anything about hardware, so I would like to ask if the FPGA is compulsory in this kind of application. The input signal would be produce by matlab, is it possible to send this signal by USB and to receive the output of the modulator directly on the computer also with the same USB? Then the algorithm would be run directly on the computer.

2)      Anyway if the FPGA is compulsory or not (but no FPGA would permit to save a lot of money!), do you know what are the cheapest components possible to have a behavior similar of what I need, I mean a modulator with non-linear behavior in order to work on linearization algorithm.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Best regards,

Ludovic

RJH>> No, the BB signal must be generated from FPGA to DAC to modulator.  Output data must be received by something like a spectrum analyzer and then brought to the computer.

RJH>> The easiest way is to purchase the DAC34H84 EVM and the TSW1400 EVM board.  This will give you a complete working HW set-up that is ready to go for your application.  You can look these parts up on www.ti.com.

  • Thank you very much for your answer!

Actually I am able to borrow the FPGA DE2 altera (http://www.altera.com/education/univ/materials/boards/de2/unv-de2-board.html) from another laboratory.

Do you know if this fpga would be compatible with the DAC5682z EVM ? Actually this modulator is the same price than the DAC34H84 EVM, Why did you advice me the second one?

Last question: is the ADC/DAC board included in DAC34H84 EVM (or the other)? Or should I purchase a special equipment to link my computer with the components?

I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

    Best regards,

    Ludovic

  • Ludovic:

The DAC5682z is suitable.  The FPGA is electrically compatible.  I am not sure about mechanically (i.e. if the connectors will mate up.)  If not, you can contact your local sales office and request a interposer board from TI.  We have typically made these to solve your type of problem.

The DAC EVM (either one) does not include the FPGA and therefore does not generate any patterns.  You can purchase the TSW1400 EVM which is a comprehensive pattern generator tool to work with TI DACs.  The DAC348x family is a newer device and the TSW1400 is a newer tool.  Alternatively you can use your own Altera board to generate the patterns.

  • Thank you very much for your help!

I have a last point which is not very clear for me. I can connect directly the FPGA with my computer to set up it right (by USB it works?)?

After my signal goes through the DAC, can I connect the DAC with my computer in order to get the output signal? Or do I need a third component if I want to get back the output signal on my computer? Or can I get back the output signal on my computer by using the FPGA as a link between the DAC and my computer?

Thank you again for your precious help!

    Best regards,

    Ludovic

  • No, the DAC output can not go directly to the computer.  You will need some kind of receiver.  This can be an instrument like a spectrum analyzer or an ADC which can feed back into the FPGA.

You may benefit from the TSW4200 Development kit.  This kit interfaces with the FPGA board and provides a DAC for up-converting the signal and an ADC for down-converting the signal.  Everything is then captured by the FPGA.  You can check it out by searching on www.ti.com.

  • I don't know if I hit a wrong key or if an administrator deleted my message but it is not here anymore, so I post again:

Sorry to restart this discussion now but I was away for a while.

Unfortunately the TSW4200 Development kit is too expensive. To buy an extra ADC seems a better solution for me.

What are the characteristics I have to check when I choose an ADC?

Do you think the ADS1118EVM is appropriate to link a DAC5682z EVM (or other) and a FPGA (as the DE2 of Altera). Moreover, this  ADS1118EVM has an USB port, does it mean I will be able to get the ouput directly on the computer whithout feed back the DAC5682z into the FPGA?

Thank you very much for your help.

  • My last questions would really permit me to know exactly the stuff I need and as a consequence I would be able to order everything which is necessary for my experiments.
If someone can enlighten me abouth these questions, it would help me a lot !

    Thank you in advance !
