DCA1000EVM: Ethernetconnection,SPI connection

Hello,

Today I managed to partially get my AWR1243BOOST and DCA1000 set up working but I hit some errors around the successful uses as well.

1. Immediately upon powering up the boards the red NERR LED on the AWR1243BOOST board is lit. When I attempt to connect the SPI I obtain a time out error (see the first attached log). When reset in the GUI is pressed once again though the red NERR LED goes out and SPI connection can occur. Pressing reset in mmWave studio before attempting the SPI connection the first time doesn't change anything (i.e. SPI connection must fail,  then reset is pressed, then SPI can connect).

2. I keep getting an error message that the ethernet cable is disconnected (when using the setup DCA1000 window) even though the cable is in securely. Restarting mmWavestudio occasionally fixed this, after many failures at the same point and restarting mmWave studio a few times I got the ethernet connection to be recognised and had three successful runs using the data capture demo script. However it then seemed that the the etherrnet connection was dropped and a subsequent attempt ended in failure (See second attached log).

3. After some more opening and closing mmWave studio and power cycling the boards (Having to deal with error number 1 each time power was cycled) the ethernet connection was again usable and many runs were succesful (see third attached log).

4 Now, the ethernet connection appears to be connected (i.e. there is no error message saying it's disconnected and the DCA1000 setup screen is as described in the user guide) but when a frame is triggered the LVDS Buffer overflow LED lights red and in the output window I get the message: STS_LVDS_BUFFER_FULL Async event recieved(9) (see the fourth attached log

. This now persists through restarting mmWave studio, power cycling the boards and rebooting the PC.

Any ideas on what could be causing this extremely unstable performance?

  • This is what appears in wireshark when trigger frame is pressed. Also, another attempt with the firewall completely off gave the same problem.

  • I have just attempted the same set of steps on a separate machine running windows 10. The same errors (1 followed by 4) appear.
  • I have the same issue. I cannot even ping the 192.168.33.180 from the windows 10 host. Trying with the firewall off. Tried debugging by using wireshark. I get destination unreachable.

  • We have the same behavior with our DCA1000EVM - AWR1243BOOST setup.
    The Ethernet connectivity issue makes it unusable.
    TI, can you offer any suggestions on how to find the problem?

  • Also, the LED that lights red is the FPGA_ERR_LED2 I believe, the sixth one down. Just to provide it's proper name.

    This is accompanied by the green DATA_TRANS_PROG_LED1. This one then doesn't turn off when reset is pressed in the connections tab while the FPGA_ERR_LED2 one does turn off when reset is pressed.
  • Just to put everything in one place: powering up the boards (DCA1000 and AWR1243BOOST) with only the SOP0 jumper followed by placing the SOP1 jumper and pressing NRST on the AWR1243BOOST board fixes the SPI connection issue.

    The ethernet connection issue remains. I provide another summary here of the two problems that occur.

    1. Error received saying that the ethernet cable is disconnected despite being snugly plugged in.
    2. If the ethernet cable is detected as being connected then when trigger frame is pressed the red FPGA_ERR LED lights up on the DCA1000, along with the green DATA_TRAN_PRG LED. In wireshark it appears that the DCA1000 and the PC are connected as they appear to exchange packets (see attached picture). No data is transferred according to wireshark (except the small packets in the image seen when the setup DCA1000 step is completed) which is corroborated by the empty data file. When reset is pressed in the connections tab the red LED turns off but the DATA_TRAN_PRG LED remains lit.

    The switches on the DCA1000 are set as follows:

    I am using mmWave Studio version 1.0.0.0.

    Attached is a log from the most recent unsuccessful attempt.

    Assistance would be appreciated as currently the setup is unusable (a successful data capture has not been seen since 9th August and before then not since mid July).

  • Hello Sam,

    I know it's a long chain of discussion here but could you please help us these informations

    1. FPGA firmware version: this is available in the pop-up window when you click 'Setup DCA1000' button and connect over network.

    2. AWR1243 device version : this info is available on Connection TAB of mMWaveStudio screen (device status and Die ID) when you connect over SPI.

    3. In case of LVDS overflow, do you use continuous streaming mode or framing mode?

    4. Whenever your are doing reset, it's via mmWaveStudio 'Reset control' or physical power cycle to both of the boards (AWR1243+DCA1000)

    Points to consider -

    1. You don't need to reconnect to DCA1000 using 'Setup DCA1000' if it is connected once and while you do 'Reset control' button clicked to reset AWR1243. So try skipping 'Setup DCA1000' multiple times.

    2. Make sure that AWR1243 sFlash is erased before connecting SPI.

    3.I am using framing mode with the default frame configuration in mmWave Studio (no of frames=8, no of chirp loops=128).

    4. I am using the mmWave studio reset button in the connections tab.

    With regards to the suggestions:

    1. Are you saying that if I press reset in the connections tab then the DCA1000 shouldn't need setting up again? When I attempted this the arm DCA1000 button in the sensor config tab is greyed out. Upon pressing the setup DCA1000 button the FPGA version shows as 0.0.0.0. Pressing the connect button in the setup DCA1000 window then causes the window to show the same FPGA version as before (2.7 Record Bit File) but the DCA1000 Arm button remains greyed out.

    2. I haven't attempted this yet. Is this done using uniflash?

    Hi Jitendra,

    Working on the assumption that I am to use uniflash to erase the sFlash I performed the following steps (I'm not sure if I did it correctly so I detail the steps here.

    1. Placed the AWR1243BOOST in SOP5 mode (jumpers placed 101).

    2.Opened Uniflash and saw a screen as shown in the first picture attached.

    3.Selected the AWR1243BOOST device from the menu and saw a screen as shown in the second picture. I then pressed start which took me to the screen is shown in picture 3.

    4. Navigated to the settings and utilities tab and changed the COM port to the user/Uart port. (See picture 4).

    5. I attempted to search for 'erase' but there were no results (see picture 5). From this I then assumed that the correct course of action was to press the format sFlash button which brought up a progress screen and the results of which are shown in the final picture.

    At this point I assumed that I had successfully erased the sFlash.

    Unfortunately exactly the same problem persisted. I have also attached the log from this post-erase run in case it is at all useful.

    The board (DCA1000) was bought via Mouser Electronics and I have received the following email from them:

    "Thank you for your email. Our technical team have been directed to advise you to contact the manufacturer for assistance.

    You will need to register and submit a request for tech support on: http://e2e.ti.com

    If Texas Instruments deem the part to be defective they will advised us to then assist with a replacement or refund."

    Is this something TI can assist with?

    Based on all of the information that you have provided us, it appears that your board may be defective. Please follow the procedure for obtaining a replacement DCA1000EVM.
