AWR2243BOOST: Help with selecting a development kit

Part Number: AWR2243BOOST
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AWR1843AOPEVM, , MMWAVEICBOOST, AWR1843, AWR2243, AWR1843AOP, AWR1843BOOST

Hi,

I am in the process of studying the various development kits that TI offers for the AWR mmwave group of sensors. I am planning to purchase hardware for a bare minimal demonstration set up to acquire sufficient data without having to buy and use the DCA1000 data capture card (For now, I do not require high resolution LVDS ADC data or application data). Between the AWR2243BOOST and AWR1843AOPEVM (which has to be paired with the MMWAVEICBOOST), I noticed a difference in the available data sources through USB:

The AWR2243BOOST gives the user USB connection to an onboard XDS110 for programming and debugging while the AWR1843AOPEVM (paired with the MMWAVEICBOOST) has an on-chip microcontroller and DSP, and gives the user USB connectivity through XDS110 and FTDI FT4232. I understand that the two radar transceivers are very different in terms of capabilities, but what does this mean with relation to the available data between the two? - like the fact that the schematic block diagram for the MMWAVEICBOOST shows that it provides additional control and communication protocols apart from the XDS110 debugging like GPIOs, SOP, SPI 1 and 2, and RS232 through the FTDI.

What data would I get out of the FTDI controller on the AWR1843AOPEVM + MMWAVEICBOOST combination that I otherwise would not get out of the AWR2243BOOST board because of it lacking the same?

  • Hi,

AWR2243B is a sensor only board. Which means that there is no processing that will happen on the sensor. In your case this means that AWR2243BOOST can only be used to capture raw data with the DCA1000 board.

AWR1843 is a sensor with integrated programmable processors. You will be able to run demos on this platform. These demos send the processed data through UART for display.

  • Alright, so I now understand that the XDS110 in both applications is only for the purpose of debugging and programming and that if I need to extract raw ADC out of the AWR2243, I would need an LVDS data capture device. Is this correct?

I see that the FTDI connects to the AWR1843AOPEVM through the 60 pin HDI on SPI1, SPI2, I2C lines. If the FTDI onboard the MMWAVEICBOOST is to acquire processed data through UART for those demo programs, what do the additional communication protocols that are made available through the FTDI do?

Further, if the AWR1843 and AWR1843AOP are similar in most aspects with the exception of the Antenna On Chip, why does the AWR1843BOOST lack the FTDI connectivity that is present on the MMWAVEICBOOST attachment for the AWR1843AOP?

  • Hi,

    1) Yes, in order to collect raw data with AWR2243BOOST you would need a DCA1000 board

    2) The AWR1843BOOST EVM provides connectivity for XDS and UART through FTDI (XDS emulator is on the BOOST board)

    3) AWR1843AOP EVM is a new generation of EVMs that use also ICBOOST for XDS connectivity. (there is no XDS emulator on the AOP board)
