Hi,

We are building an ADAS system using AWR1642, for various reasons, we used mobile holders to place AWR1642(fixed to wind shield inside the car) , we achieved 71% Detection Accuracy, I strongly feel due to vibration of the mobile holder fixed on the windshield there are misses in the detection.

Can you please let me know, if my analogy is correct.

  • Hi,

    Based on the information provided it is difficult to provide an answer.

    Usually the radar sensors will be mounted on cars at different locations (behind bumper,..) and will be submitted to vibrations.

    So, even if vibrations may affect the performance, I don't think it will affect the performance so strongly

    You could try to mount it in a different place and check the performance

    Good Day!

    As suggested by you, I have mounted the radar on the car dashboard and I had tested today on road.

    Following are the observations:

    Objects like Motorbikes and humans are mostly not detected and I also Observed few False Positives(when there are no objects on road, AWR1642 detects something as an object with range and angle)

    Please find the attached images as described above:

    False Positive

    In the above picture range and angle do not match with the objects in front of the RADAR on the right hand side(Host Vehicle is Idle)

    In the above picture, vehicles on the right hand side not detected

    In the above image, the person is not detected(but the RADAR had detected the same person in the previous frames, but its not continuous)

    In the above picture, the Car and the person are not detected(Host Vehicle is Idle)

    Please note, we are using a python code for getting the data from AWR1642BOOST, Can you please let me know, if mounting the RADAR on the car's dashboard obstructs the radar from detecting objects? , Do I need to increase the height of the mount with a little front tilt?

    Can you please let me know your comments / suggestions.

    Sometime the detection may not be continuous due to other objects in the environment.

    Also, I think there will be some attenuation from the wind shield.

    Detection of moving objects should be much better.

    Are you running SRR/USRR mode?

    Can you please try to place the EVM outside the car and check if the performance is different?

    We are using AWR1642BOOST SRR EVM.

    Now, I understand attenuation from the wind shield could be a reason for objects like motorbikes / pedestrians not detected from inside the car.

    As you advised, we will mount on the pumper, test and share the results with you.

    One Curious Question, Can I upload few other pictures from our analysis, Can you please share me your insights, there are places where the range and angle are a mismatch, the reason to ask this question is, we will have some conclusions for our analysis.

    Unfortunately it is hard to draw conclusions from pictures alone.

    When an unexpected behavior is observed it is difficult to say if there is a bug in the target code implementations or if the behavior is due to the environment.

    Usually for final conclusions, raw data would have to be captured.

    Please note, We have tested and compared our codes performance with MMWAVE demo visualizer, all the objects detected were matching.

    Before we mount the RADAR outside the car, we have to complete one last test. I will complete that and share the pictures with you.

    Can you please clarify me the following:

    1) In the case of mounting the AWR1642BOOST EVM outside the car, I see there is a need to have an enclosure around the EVM, Can you please suggest me about the type of material(Example - Plastic / Acrylic / Glass) to be used for covering the EVM from water / dust.

    2) Can you please let me know, if there is radar signal attenuation when placed inside wind shield (which is a transparent glass), what kind of materials to be used as radar enclosure to avoid signal attenuation, if placed on the outside of the car

    3) What is the reason for radar signal attenuation, when placed inside windshield, Can you please share.me any technical documentation.

    An Acrylic Hemisphere enclosure, would it be good for radar with heat sink and exhaust fan to remove the heat?
