IWR6843ISK: River flow: Range and surface velocity

Part Number: IWR6843ISK

Have arequirement to measure river flow from a lamp post at an approximate vertical height of approximately 20m from the river top  surface. The river water level and velocity has to be measured. The lamp post is on a bridge across the river and in the middle of the river. I have the iwr6843isk at an angle of 45 deg to the vertical making a slant range of approximately 20*sqrt(2). The actual velocity of water reported is going to be velocityRadar/sqrt(2).

I have the IWR6843ISK and I have conected it to my laptop via the usb cable. The usb cable is providing iiwr6843isk with the required power from the laptop. I am running the mmwave demo visualizer with sdk 3.5 and have flashed the appropriate binary on the iwr6843isk provided in sdk 3.5 demo folder. From the demo visualizer, I have set the required fields with appropriate values with a configuration of 1 tx 1 rx. On the plots tab, I have experimented with cfar threshold for range and doppler.

I am not getting any reliable confident results. Cfar too low and I get many objects. Too high and nothing. Same with velocity. Started experimenting in a large room. There I get range and velocity results from walls and doppler from moving around etc.

Where am I going wrong with the river scenario? Is sufficient power is being delievered from laptop? Do I need to supply extra 5V from pins? In a room, I experimented with a different config of beamforming with all tx set to ON i.e. chirpcfg last field set to 7 as opposed to 1. Interested in boresight so phase set to zero in profilecfg i.e. no beam steering. I did not get any change is SNR in rangle plot on demo visualizer when compared to 1 tx 1 rx config. Maybe all tx ON not working. How shall I resolve the situation? Any chance of getting river range and surface velocity?

  • Hi Mansoor,

Do you have results at distances closer than 20m? For distances further than 10m you will likely need some kind of lensing to concatenate the radar beam.

TI doesn't sell lenses but there are several vendors online you can find from.
