IWR1443BOOST: MSS Power Up async event was not received

Part Number: IWR1443BOOST
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: IWR1443, UNIFLASH

Hi Team,

Asking for your assistance on our customer's query concerning the use of mmWave studio. They're currently using DCA1000EMV with IWR1443BOOST. When using mmWave studio they're unable to load MSS firmware. The version they were able to load was 0.0.0.0 but the SPI Connect couldn't work. They've shared a couple of E2E threads below having similar problem but the mentioned workarounds does not work. They've also tried different versions of mmWave studio with different firmwares (also the firmware of the others versions) but to no avail.

Thanks in advance!

  • Hello Jejomar,

For starters, can you let us know the following details about the device and the software used :

    1. IWR1443 ES version? The options are ES1.0, 2.0 or ES3.0. If the board was recently purchased, it should be ES3.0. The customer can refer to IWR1443 Errata document (device marking section) to know about that.

    2. mmWave Studio version used

    3. DFP Firmware used to load in mmWave Studio.

It would be good if you could post a screenshot of the Connection Tab in mmWave Studio with the output log.

  • Hello Ishita,

Many thanks for looking into this. Here are the details:

    1. The ES version of the IWR1443BOOST is indeed ES3.0.

    2. They've used the version _02_01_01_00 of mmWave Studio. Also tried the _02_00_00_02 and _01_00_00_00 version.

    3. They used these firmwares: xwr12xx_xwr14xx_radarss.bin and xwr12xx_xwr14xx_masterss.bin.
They've also tried different firmwares belonging to the folders of the other versions of mmwave studio (those listed above).

Attaching the output of mmWave studio for reference:

  • Hello Jejomar,

    Thankyou for your inputs here.

As you can see the MSS Firmware version is 0.0.0.0, it means the MSS Firmware wasn't downloaded properly.

Did the customer try clearing the flash contents using Uniflash in SOP 5 mode and then resetting the device again in SOP 2 for connection.

This usually happens when there is some junk in the flash and we have mostly seen this issue go away after formatting the flash.

Please try and let us know your insights.

    Regards,

    Ishita

  • Hello Ishita,

Thank you for your response. I've shared these procedures with our customer and received their feedback as follows:

I downloaded Uniflash and tried to format the flash. I have tried in both SOP2 mode and SOP5 mode (SOP0=1, SOP1=0, SOP2=1, that's correct?). But I am unable to proceed with the loading of the formatting, although I am able to start it. I am attaching an image of the problem.

    Kind Regards,

    Jejomar

  • Hello Jejomar,

Yes, it looks like they're not able to format the flash.

Here are a few pointers to check in uniflash:

    • Please make sure that you have set the right SOP jumper (SOP0 and SOP2) on EVM in order to put device in flashing mode. Do the power cycle after putting the jumpers then start using Uniflash.
    • Make sure the COM port number is correct in the Uniflash ‘Settings & utilities’ TAB. This COM port should be the number which is populated as a “XDS110 Class Application/User UART”.
    • Disconnect and connect the USB cable if Uniflash is not able to access the COM port. Sometimes, the COM port is also used by some other application. Make sure that is not the case.
    • Check the power supply if it is according to the spec. (5V ~3A)
