Hi,

We are working on an "expressway traffic monitoring application",

The Maximum velocity measurement requirement is 200km/h plus

Currently, we are using IWR1642Boost for evaluation purposes.

Referring to the document spyy002b.pdf Page number 7, there it is mentioned

the maximum velocity by another 3× to 4× so that maximum target velocities in excess of 300 kph are trackable, making the IWR1642 sensor a suitable sensor for fast-moving traffic scenes such as those around highways and on-ramps

That is the reason we chose that sensor for our application:
Please clear the below questions:

Is that possible to achieve detection of 300km/h velocity with this sensor using IWR1642BOOT EVM, by just tuning configs and code?

Thank a lot for help,

1. I am able to use the Estimator tool, but don't know how to upload the setting file generated by the Estimator tool onto the Device.

2. One more thing, is it ok to use xWR6843AOP module for high-speed traffic monitoring applications?

Speed up to 180km/h and distance up to 100 meters.

HI,

As you know, the “maximum unambiguous velocity” natively supported by the device is determined by the inter-chirp interval configured in the chirp configuration.

The 3x-4x number in the document refers to the additional improvements over the “max unambiguous velocity”. We can potentially get this enhancement by using additional processing/max velocity extension techniques. Some methods that we have explored within TI are

Velocity Disambiguation using Different inter-chirp intervals : Estimate velocity of an object using two different inter-chirp intervals. If the two velocity estimates do not agree, then disambiguate the velocity using algorithms such as Chinese remainder theorem. An example of this technique is in on Page 11 of the following design document: www.ti.com/.../tidud36b.pdf
Velocity Extension at the tracker layer : This method measures the change in Range of a tracked object over multiple frames to get an estimate of the velocity (Range-Rate). HI, Bikram:

1) You can find some training video for estimation tool at: https://training.ti.com/mmwave-sensing-estimator-overview

2) The xwr6843AOP module is designed to have wide azimuth field of view (FOV) and wide elevation FOV, because of which the antenna gain is less comparing to ISK type of antenna. So it is not very suitable for long range radar applications.
