MMWCAS-RF-EVM: Antenna Calibration

Hi TI experts,

We're currently working with the antenna calibration routine for the MMWCAS-RF-EVM. The routine is well described in the "Imaging Radar Using Cascaded mmWave Sensor" document.

However we would also like to ask whether you can give us some more information about the background ideas for the calibration routine? How does it work?

It would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

    For calibration, one needs to create some sort of a "controlled environment". It is possible if the environment has multiple reflecting elements, they may mess up the calibration. You need to have strong target (If there are other stronger object which reflects higher energy then it would be a problem) for the calibration. When you are trying to transmit with multiple Tx to form a stronger beam you need to make sure the phases of the transmitters are also matched. I have answered to some similar concerns in the past. I would recommend you going through those responses first and then you can come back with questions in case you have any.

    Sorry for the late response and thanks very much for your reply.

    Unfortunately it's not what I want to ask. Maybe I did not make the question clear. I try to formulate it again.

    - I am well aware of the steps and conditions for performing the calibration routine.

    - What I would like to know is: Why the formula, which is described in "Imaging Radar Using Cascaded mmWave Sensor" document, helps the calibration? How is this formula derived?

    - Since at the end we have to calibrate our own systems, I need to understand where does the formula come from and which aspects do we have to consider at calibration instead of simply applying the formula.

    Sorry for the delay and Thanks for the clarification. 

    I will have to reach out to the internal team to understand the background of this formula (I believe you are referring to formulae in section 3.2.2 of the document).
