I need help in choosing a sensor that just provides a digital logic signal in terms of 0 and 1. For example, if there is light then sensor output should be 1, and when there is no light then 0. I want to make my product as simple as possible in terms of programming as well as circuit designing. I have to integrate this sensor in a keypad where it will turn ON/OFF backlight according to the day and night. I am already using I2C based sensor but it requires some resistors and capacitors which I want to avoid and also it needs a little complex program to monitor than a simple logic program. I hope it will clear my question. Let me know if I missed something. Thanks

Hi Ali,

The OPT3001 device is able to output a simple logic signal based on ambient light level if transparent hysteresis-style comparison mode is used. You will be able to program the device to set your light level of interest using the low-limit and high-limit registers. The interrupt pin can be polled by an external MCU to control the backlight based on the measured light levels. Three pull-up resistors are required. Additionally, a 100-nF bypass capacitor is needed between the Vdd pin and ground close to the device. You mentioned that you did not want to include extra resistors or capacitors, but these components are essential for operation of the device.

Hi,
Thanks for the above information.
Is there any example code available to set up the registers for the desire light threshold at which the interrupt pin will trigger. I am testing the sensor with an Arduino or similar breakout board.

Hi Ali,

The EVM for the OPT3001 has a GUI that can be used to write and read to registers for the testing of device settings. https://www.ti.com/tool/OPT3001EVM

Here is some example code for an OPT3007 driver. It is configured for OPT3007, but you can use for OPT3001 as well by updating the TI_OPT3007_BUSADDRESS defined on line 15 of opt3007_hostControl.h
