IWR1843: Part choices for people counting in overhead or wall mounted applications

Part Number: IWR1843

I have been looking at the range of mmWave sensors, specifically the IWR1843 and IWR68XX series, but i am open to others in the mmWave series.

People counting has been demonstrated in several demonstrations by the IWR68xx series, but not by the IWR1843, which would lead me to think the IWR68XX series to be a better choice for people counting, but the cost per unit is higher and availability of the IWR68XX series appears to be lower.

I have looked through a majority of the application examples and documentation on these devices, however it is unclear the advantages of each chipset for differing applications such as overhead, or wall mounted people counting. Can someone please provide some direction, or an indication of the critical specifications that would be advantageous for the applications of overhead or wall mounted people counting.

Thanks in advance
Matthew

  • Hello Matthew,

For any sort of people counting, the 68XX series is typically recommended. The main difference between these two chipsets is the output frequency. For consumer and industrial applications, the 60GHz band is usually the required frequency, output from the 68xx. The 70GHz frequency of the 18xx is typically used in automotive applications.
