If the REF pin is allowed to float it will do just that. The reference will float to an unknown value and the reference will be incorrect/unknown, and therefore the output will be unknown/incorrect. The REF pin needs to be driven to a known value for proper operation.

Miles, this is the answer I provided above, is there another aspect of the REF pin you are looking for here? As I mention above, you cannot leave the REF pin floating and expect proper device operation. It must be driven to a known state for proper operation.
